From Publishers Weekly

A former publicity director at Simon and Schuster, Musiker's motivation behind writing a book of her own was the revelation that one smartly tossed sports fact is worth as much in a boardroom full of men as a year's worth of equally smart conversation. A casual, "Jerry Rice was even more amazing than usual," and Musiker was no longer the invisible woman. "Then the walls came tumbling down," she writes. Ladies, read the title carefully: this is not a book for smart girls who played sports, love sports, follow sports or have an interest in sports deeper than their lipstick shade. Those with more than a passing interest in the sports she covers-football, baseball, basketball, boxing, hockey, golf and car racing-may take offense to tips like, "Set your sights on a hottie and root for him and his team." But for the smart girl with a desire to know of what her male counterparts speak, Musiker's is a book to study prior to the company golf outing. (Don't know what a dogleg is? You will now.) Women will be comforted by Musiker's "I'm-learning-along-with-you" writing style, but don't be fooled: her research and descriptions of the game, as well as useful sections on "Players to Know," movies to watch, books to read and great moments in sports are top notch. Call it a condensed version of the Sports For Dummies line of books. Only here, Musiker has replaced "Dummies" with "Girls." Smart girls. From Booklist

Armed with both facts and humor, Musiker has written what could become an invaluable resource for football, baseball, hockey, basketball, golf, boxing, or NASCAR widows. It's a good thing she is a sports fan herself, so there's none of that arm's-length ickiness that often drips from advice books that proffer, "Just pretend to be interested, girls!" Instead, Musiker presents valuable information for sports-weary women, encouraging them to give spectator sports a try--they might just love them like she does. Each sport gets its own chapter, subdivided by three sections: "Here's How It Works," "Players You Need to Know," and a glossary. Helpful sidebars--"The Gipper Revealed" (explaining the "win one for the Gipper" allusion and its Ronald Reagan connection) or "Baseball Records Cheat Sheet" (great for cocktail party opening lines)--make the book browsable and fun to use. Sure, some might quibble about certain overlooked points (How can you talk basketball or football without understanding the time-out?), but all in all, this guidebook will be a welcome helper for millions of sports-shy women (and men). I liked this book that it was short and sweet however I kind of wish they included more information on football, however, the book was probably not meant for that, and for to just point out the basic points of football.

Being a female from a huge football town, I've been surrounded by sports my entire life. Even though that's the case, I have a lot to learn! This book was informative and has given me some insight into both college and professional sports. It was an easy read, and I could readily follow the stats and strategy behind each game. I would highly recommend this work to any woman out there.

This book is a great intro to sports for the clueless (or semi-cluess) woman (or man, I suppose.) Musiker covers basketball, baseball, football, hockey, golf, boxing, and car racing. This book truly is basic enough for a total beginner, but myself (not a beginner with four of the sports covered) still found out things that I didn't know, and got clarification of some things I thought I understood.Musiker gives just enough information to make you understand the game (and be able to have a conversation about it) without getting too in-depth about any aspect. She also gives short biographies on some notable players (past and present - side note - while there will always be discrepencies in these kinds of lists, I found some obvious holes that I think most people would agree with - no Yzerman on the hockey legends list? No Ken Griffey Jr. on the legends-in-training baseball list? But yet, Eli Manning on the football list? Musiker must be from the east..)Also included are a "just know this" section which sums up the chapter, and a pretty-detailed glossary at the end of each chapter.Overall, this is a great starter book for those new to sports (or just some of the sports covered) or could be a nice refresher for someone just above a beginner level. It can help you determine if you might have an interest in learning more about any of the sports covered. (If you want to learn more about football, "Get your own damn beer, I'm watching the game" by Holly Robinson Peete is wonderful.)

As one who has often said "Football players? You can tell their intelligence by the size of their necks," I have passed a pleasant lifetime mocking sports in general (and hockey and NASCAR in particular). Which is why, I guess, my man kept casually propping this volume up on my nightstand. Okay, I'm no stranger to the fine art of compromise, so in I dove. No one is more surprised than I am to report that this breezy, hip primer actually makes sports interesting, especially the profiles of the star players. Given my particular predisposition, I have to credit the author's conveniently bite-sized factoids and witty observations on the battle of the sexes, the sugar that makes this medicine go down, and I totally agree with her assertion that a little sports knowledge can help you as much in the boardroom as the bedroom. So if you want to join in--or at least be a little less lame--keep a copy of THE SMART GIRL'S GUIDE next to the remote control and in no time at all, you, too, will receive admiring glances upon uttering things like "Darnell Hillman? Didn't he win the 'Biggest ABA Afro Award' at the 1997 reunion?" You go, girl.

This book is fabulous! Take it from a woman who doesn't like things being thrown at her and therefore has no knowledge of sports, this book has been extremely useful. I work with teenagers and am amazed at the conversations that I've been able to start with just a little bit of information gathered from the pages! And now that football season has begun, I find myself watching the games with book in hand. The book is clever and funny (which makes me want to read it because its entertaining) and explains everything in easy to understand details (I've had quite a few "A-ha" moments that I never had when men would try to explain the physics of a fly ball!). Plus, I love the sports related movies and bios on important sportsmen in each field, which helps me to actually care about the sport.

Finally a book that explains the mechanics of these games in a way that is entertaining and informative. I had never understood the fascination with boxing or Nascar before reading this book. Not that I'll ever be a fan but can now be a part of these conversations at work instead of on the sidelines. I'm already a reasonably knowledgeable basketball fan and still found new snippets in this book. The style is breezy and fun making the "facts" much more entertaining to learn. A great gift for anyone but especially your girlfriends who are sports-disabled!

For those of us whose idea of following sports is grazing at the snack table during a Super Bowl party, this is the perfect book. Musiker walks you through the personalities and rules for each sport in a fun style that makes you realize just why sports are so popular.

Did not have anything about soccer, which I was looking for.
