Heather Davis: At first glance, I don't seem like an outdoorsy person, but somehow I've spent a lot of time in the woods, including working as a chef in remote Alaska and teaching school in a tiny logging town in the North Cascade Mountains. Never Cry Werewolf is an homage to both those rugged adventures and all the fun times I've spent singing stupid songs about lunch meat (eww!) and gobbling down s'mores (yum!). I didn't set out to write a book about werewolves, but I fell in love with the idea that everyone has a side of themselves that's shown to the world and one that's kept hidden. These days, I'm enjoying big city life in the Pacific Northwest. When I'm not writing YA novels, I'm haunting my local movie theater and spending time with a colorful cast of friends and family (who do occasionally howl).

"Never Cry Werewolf" can best be described as "cute". There is no depth to this story, and it is just a repackaging of about a million other YA paranormals floating around out there these days.Shelby Locke is a normal, boy crazy 16-year-old girl and it lands her in hot water with her father and his trophy wife, Priscilla. As punishment for breaking their rules, Shelby is sent to a brat camp where she encounters the son of a famous rock star, Austin Bridges III.There is an instant connection between the two, and Shelby soon learns that Austin has a terrifying secret: he is a werewolf! Upon arrival at the camp, contraband items including PDAs, make-up, and junk food were confiscated. Shelby makes it her responsibility to help Austin break into the locked room so he can get his serum. If he doesn't, he'll undergo the Change and a werewolf will be running loose in camp.There were so many things I didn't like about this book, so it's hard to know where to begin. But let's start with Shelby's relationship to her father and her stepmother. Shelby honestly isn't that bad of a kid, and her actions certainly didn't warrant a trip to Brat Camp. In order for that to be more believable, Shelby would have needed to do some more extreme things before I could get on board with her getting shipped away for the summer. Davis just didn't try hard enough to justify why Shelby needed to go there.Then there's the camp, and Shelby has to turn in her PDA. I had a total de ja vu moment, because the same thing happened in Lauren Kate's "Fallen".As for Austin, I found him pretty boring and couldn't understand why Shelby found him so swoon-worthy.And finally, there's not really all that much action going on in the story. It's very simplistic, shallow storytelling. I would have liked a few twists and surprises, but there were none. The ending was predictable and I think I rolled my eyes a little.The best thing this book had going for it was its pretty cover art. Nothing found inside was impressive or creative, so I'd recommend passing this one up.
Heather Davis introduces readers to Shelby, the protagonist of her new book, Never Cry Werewolf. Shelby has recently lost her mother, and her eccentric, rich and distracted father has remarried a woman, she can not stand. To battle her chaotic new home-life, Shelby acts out by being a little bit boy-crazy. A walk under the moon with a cute guy from her school, ends in a one way ticket to brat camp. They'll be no trip to Cabo with her school chums - nope, its camping, hiking, and mountain climbing - all while listening to camp counselors spew self-help nonsense to make Shelby feel better about herself.Her life is looking rather bleak as she is serenaded with perky camp songs by the camp counselor ... when Austin Bridges III drives up in a stretch limo ... and Shelby boy-crazy meter goes off.Maybe it is because I have been watching a lot of Disney & Noggin lately (highlight of the night - The Fresh Beat Band), but I finished this book and wasn't disappointed. This book is all about how you approach it - the reader base should be young and for a 12 year old - it is good. The writing is done well, the tone is light and there is nothing dark, dreary or deep. I really don't mind stereotypical characters. There is a reason that there are a ton of books about the mean stepmothers - because it happens all the time IRL.Harris' characters weren't as developed as I would have hoped. Shelby was described as tough, but I found that she was actually easily distracted and pressured by the guys she is interested in, she always mentioned that she wasn't swayed by fashion as all the other girls were, but she was constantly referring to her clothing lines - yeah American Eagle - boo Prada. I really liked the character of Ariel and would have liked to have seen more development with her. Austin was a contradiction - he came across as the tough guy in the beginning but as it progressed he looked more and more like a pacifist and sensitive, but depth wasn't really reached with him at all.Once you get past the reveal the story actually gets better. Shelby and Austin start showing some depth and the plot starts to converge into something tangible. I was frustrated with some of Shelby's actions, and Charles is just downright annoying (obviously supposed to be). The ending was sweet, with a big "Awww[...]" like you would at the end of a Selena Gomez film... and overall the book was good. This is really, though, a teen book, and older audiences might find it very juvenile. I recommend the book for 11 to 15 year olds and moms don't have to worry about anything sexual or inappropriate. I can defiantly see a Disney made for TV movie - with Selena Gomez as Shelby and one of those annoying twins from that hotel show as Austin. Buy it for your tween.
A excellent book. The only problem I had with it is the quick wrap up ending that I don't want to spoil to those who haven't read the book. The story deals with Shelby who mother dead of three years and dad remarried a woman who got her dad twisted around her finger so that Shelba and her dad doesn't seem much of each other any more. Shipped off to brat camp Shelby meets and falls in love with Austin the were wolf who has a problem of his own. Figuring out a way out of the camp before the next full moon. With Shelby in on his secret the two need to really put their heads together or Charles the son a tabloid magazine will get an exclusive story that were wolves really exist.
