This book is especially superb. There is a very special reason why this is true. The book is truly written by an expert Botanical Drawer & Painter. Ms. Ravet-Haevemans' credentials are even more impeccable than her knowledge of drawing and painting Botanicals. I mention specifically Painting, because the author does mostly painting and her use of 'drawing' is mostly for her field work, not for her museum work.Yet the thing that makes the book unique is that the author makes virtually no assumptions about the reader. She assumes that the reader knows virtually nothing about drawing or painting and she goes from the basics all the way to the advanced stages in the art of rendering Botanical likenesses. What struck me, as a very uninitiated reader of her book, was her revelation that "Anyone can become a decent drawer or painter of Botanicals" by knowing just a few basic facts and techniques. She then goes on to inform the reader of how one uses basic shapes, ellipsis, cones, cylinders and a few others to render the botanicals. Then she explains how this is done.She then goes through shading, depth, volume, etc. Each of her lessons are intelligible and make the assumption that the reader really does not know what they are doing. In my case, that was accurate. Yet, what I did have a background in doing was drawing the basic forms that she describes via my classes in calculus and other arithmetic disciplines. Thus, while I had always considered myself one with a lack of small motor control, it turned out that by following the author's specific techniques and by practicing, I was indeed able to draw and even to start to paint Botanicals. While painting is fundamentally the same as drawing, the techniques take more coordination and more experience with mixing colors; as well as a significant investment in paints, brushes, cold or hot pressed watercolor papers and other equipment or supplies. The most expensive of these and the most important are probably the brushes, which are absolutely very different and probably serious painters should use ONLY Sable brushes rather than other furs or artificial brushes. One only has to use their very first Sable brush to realize that this is an absolute.In every regard, the book is painstakingly accurate and illuminating. I would very seriously recommend this book to any person, experienced or not at all, who is interested in drawing or painting Botanical images. The book is worth More than the cost and the advice is impressively excellent. With this book and good supplies, all one needs to do is practice, practice and practice and anyone, as the author says, can become at least a decent and serviceable drawer and even painter of Botanical images. The book is highly recommended for anyone seeking to develop the necessary skills to paint things that grow! I recommend this book without any equivocation!

You need a good set of watercolors and some experience in painting in order to use this book. I am an art hobbyest who is interested in drawing flowers and other plants, therefore, I thought this "Introductory Guide" would be helpful to me. In fact, it is one of four such books that I recently bought from Amazon on this subject. (will post reviews on the other ones soon). While this book is at least as lovely as any of the others, it is actually all about watercolor painting.(Maybe it has something to do with the way the book was translated from the French?)I work in graphite, pen-and-ink, colored pencils, and, newly, pastels. When I do branch out to watercolor I plan to first use my 16 pan Prang set from when I was in school. Where the book discusses materials, it depicts a professional watercolor set of FIFTY-THREE pans, and also, watercolors in tubes, such as professionals use. I'm sure I will be drawing (I mean "painting") plants with my good school Prang set soon, but you really do need a wide variety of pigments in order to get the full benefit of this book. **I just checked: such sets cost HUNDREDS of dollars**On each beautiful two-page layout, a plant type is discussed (tiny type-face, though), gorgeous examples are shown, and a chart is presented with the names and swatches of the exact colors needed to render the subject. I've never seen this done, and it seems to be extraodinarily helpful. At the same time, this is no paint-by-number type of book, or one that teaches slavish copying.Another thing I love about this book is botanical information it provides. Seeing and painting living plants is one thing, but to understand them, their anatomy and other characteristics is to add understanding and meaning to art work, in my opinion. (I hope to purchase a large "botany for artists" book sometime, too.)Lovely book for watercolor artists. I don't think it is too short--there is plenty of information, and many types of plants and exercises. The type font is just rather small, especially when they use the script-style print. I can use my "readers glasses", but I can't do watercolors, so it was rather a waste for me.

A very good introduction to botanical drawing and painting, but also valuable for a more experienced artist wanting to brush up on one's technique. This book reviews basic botany and lays out lessons in an easy to follow format. The book is small and lightweight enough to take with you into the field, but has a water resistant, heavy duty cover. You will study shapes, volumes, shadows, texture and color, as well as anatomy of a plant, leaf typology, branches, stems, flower buds, flowers, fruits, vegetables, seeds, ferns, mushrooms and more.

Harriet McBryde Johnson has been a lawyer in Charleston, South Carolina, since 1985. Her solo practice emphasizes benefits and civil rights claims for poor and working people with disabilities. For more than twenty-five years, she has been active in the struggle for social justice, especially disability rights. She holds the world endurance record (fourteen years without interruption) for protesting the Jerry Lewis telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. She served the City of Charleston Democratic Party for eleven years, first as secretary and then as chair. She is a frequent contributor to The New York Times Magazine and to the disability press.

I read and loved this book years ago and recently bought it for my 19 year old granddaughter, who is a college freshman & has cerebral palsy. Harriett was a tremendously inspiring woman who lived a happy, fulfilling life, in spite of her disability. For many years, she didn't think she had long to live after accidentally watching (by herself, when she was a child) the Jerry Lewis' telethon, which portrayed muscular dystrophy as an affliction to be pitied. Much to her surprise, she kept on living and went on to become a disability rights attorney and, as witnessed here, a wonderful writer who takes you into her world with honesty & humor.

Wow!I picked up this book on recommendation thinking it would be "important" to read. The title sounded a little too serious for me and yet seemed "important", yet I remembered reading one of these essays before and really enjoying McBryde Johnson's voice.Right now I am trying to talk about the book but I no longer have it with me--when I read "Too Late to Die Young" what I discovered was Harriet McBryde Johnson's rich rich humour-filled wonderfully strong and human voice...and by human I mean, she lets you in to things that many people keep hidden--her feelings, her doubts, her sometimes brashness and outspokenness, her offense, her bodily and social realities...yet this book seems rooted in McBryde Johnson's humor, delight, and pointed truth-telling.She talks to the reader as if talking to a friend, a good friend...and one feels glad to be intimately connected (in a way: ) ) to Harriet McBryde Johnson...Enjoy!

This collection of autobiographical stories and essays is compelling, startlingly honest, and a real page-turner. I did not want it to end, and I want to know what happens next. Harriet is unconventional, funny, charming, sharp-witted, and has a true Southerner's ability to spin a yarn. Her account of meetings and conversations with Peter Singer, Princeton professor and proponent of the idea that parents should have the right to extinguish the lives of profoundly disabled children, is fascinating, chilling, thought-provoking and haunting. Admittedly living with the kind of disability that Professor Singer believes warrants extermination at birth, Harriet punctures the underlying assumptions that inform such beliefs--that disabled people are "worse off," that their quality of life is diminished. Harriet herself explodes the stereotype, and it should be noted that she is, most emphatically, NOT one of Jerry's kids. But this is not a book merely about disability, or disability rights. It is a good yarn, told by an enchanting writer, about interesting people, and I for one hope there are more stories on the way.

I came across this book of autobiographical essays when I was trying to learn more about the experience of living with cerebral palsy. Although that may not have been the late Johnson's exact diagnosis, this book stood out as the very best. Great, frank, outspoken writing of a life richly lived. Disabilities or no, it should be added to our core list of outstanding American memoirs. Johnson "young adult" novel Accidents of Nature, about a camp for disabled kids around 1970, is also autobiographical and well worth reading for any age.

For many years, I always found a way to work ms. Johnson's NYTimes article into my college classroom. And then there was the year I didn't - and ended up in a power chair myself. How ironic! And these tales are so important, her voice so clear. I miss her, and am sorry she is gone, but so happy to have her book as a living legacy for all of us, with bodies disabled or not. This has been a good year for disability rights in terms of publications. First, Mary Johnson published Make Them Go Away and now we have Harriet McByde Johnson's much anticipated Too Late to Die Young. Read together these texts provide a powerful one two punch for the disability rights movement in an era which has seen the courts gut the Americans with Disability Act. Both authors have been champions and leaders of the disability rights movement and each are gifted writers.Harriet McBryde Johnson is a gifted story teller--although I wanted to savor the text and make it last I was too spoiled to do so. I read the book cover to cover the day I received it. Now, I am going back to re-read each and every chapter. Each story told resonates at some level regardless of the subject matter. What truly struck me the most was that my life is not so different, that I am not so unsual, and that the bigotry and discrimination I encounter on a daily basis is no different from what other disabled people face. I am not the only one that is subjected to unwanted attention and grossly inappropriate comments. I am not the only one that found Christopher Reeve comments about disability offensive. I am not the only one who is treated poorly when I travel on an airline. In short, discrimination against the disabled is rampant and it is heartening to know others are experiencing and fighting against this. To know that I have two gifted authors on the side of equal rights lets me not only feel better about myself a feel less alone but know the future, in spite of the courts, will be better than the past.

Required to read this book for a sociology project but I loved every sentence! Such a great read.

ok i read this one first on acciedent and this one was my fav. some weird day i picked it up in my class. i was nine and i havee bought every book in the series my dad friends and i love this series. if you buy it i hope you injoy it alot. oh and i liked his other series body guard. hope he keeps writing

My 12 year old son has been reading this series. Generally, he is not a huge fan of leisure reading, but he has really enjoyed these books. We started off requiring him to read three chapters a day, but he quickly wanted to continue reading more. They were a huge hit! We enjoy the fact that while reading he is also learning a lot about Japanese culture in the 1600's. This series is not only entertaining but educational, as well. I highly recommend this series to young boys...maybe older ones too! :)

I personally really like this series of books. It is a good read with plenty of action, character development, little to almost no romance, and funny at times. The story gives you great verbal visuals when reading so that you can get a scene of the background and what is going on. Awesome books.

I loved it so much. My top 3 favorite series. I always love the every book in this series. Keep making more.

I am huge Jack Fletcher fan, and this book is one of my favorites of the series. Jack finds himself captured, and thus begins to question everything he has learned thus far, and learns many new skills that will help him on his way back home to his sister. Great book!

I’ve been reading Beck novels for a handful of years, ever since I discovered Black Mountain. I have t say that nothing’s changed since that day. The Fossil, a novella, is excellent! From the very beginning, I knew I’d enjoy the read. The fascination with time travel,exploration and even fixing time “anomalies” by someone’s standards, this book has you guessing and laughing along the way. It’ a non-stop kick in the balls read. Oh, I have no balls, by the way!Cheers!

Very interesting book, short, weird and action packed. Funny in a way from the different perspective of the little aliens and the defense guys. Could be a good concept for some type of temporal war between the monst and these little people... Thanks for a GoodRead.

You will never find a detective story quite like this one. Time travel ,an ancient fossil and bizarre murders all mix together in a novella you won't want to miss.

An enjoyable time travel tale with a few surprises tossed in by Beck who always writes with graphic action scenes. Looking forward to his next novel!

I enjoy reading Becks novels very much. Fossil is an interesting possibility novella.

This is a short novella, and my one complaint is that I wanted more. I so wanted this to be a full-sized book! I wanted to know more about our characters and our worlds, present, past & future!That being said, this was a lot of fun!The author manages to pack a lot into a few pages and there's a ton of action, some heartbreak, and some very interesting characters.Will happily read the author in the future!*Book downloaded via KU

The book came out yesterday and I immediately downloaded and read it last night. As usual, Greig catches the readers attention and keeps you riveted until the final paragraph. The only negative thing I can say about the book is that it is too short, it ended way too soon. He does mention Matt Kearns in the story so, hopefully, there will be a continuation story coming later.

I enjoyed reading The Fossil. Grieg Beck writes great stories. This one was no exception. It had action, humor and leprechauns.

This is an excellent technique book for beginning piano students. I have used Finger Power books for over 30 years. I'm glad they haven't changed the content. They're perfect for beginners.

This is a product for those who believe in traditional piano teaching methods, not the modern methods where students learn to play songs quickly but fail to really learn to read music or proper technique. I used this product in the 70's and am now purchasing it for my young sons. I can't tell you that it's fun, but it is effective in teaching proper technique, building finger strength, and ensuring proper development in both hands. This is like sending your hands to the gym for a piano workout. To balance out this effective-but-not-fun program, I'll also purchase the Pointer system books for my kids. That system teaches chord theory but it is fun, useful if you want to play guitar later, and the songs sound really cool for the younger student. John Thompson (from the 30's) provides the foundation for their learning, and then we will move over to Schaum after the 1st grade book. The point here is that Fingerpower should not be used alone, but rather to supplement your regular piano program, and I'd recommend finding an additional system like Pointer to help keep the learning process fun.

It's so nice to just be able to get your fingering down! I'm just starting to learn piano and this book as been immensely helpful to help me coordinate notes with finger actions on each hand. It's the perfect amount of challenging for newbies like me. Buy it!

My piano teacher recommended this book. The exercises are not too difficult and really help my overall piano performance.

At first sight, this thin book looks like child's play, but it's perfect for any age and at any stage. It's for the person who wants to acquire precision in timing, finger placement, finger strength, and equal hand development. The exercises start out easy and get progressively harder. My piano teacher says it's a book used by college piano majors to warm up for their practice sessions with their professors. You get a great sense of satisfaction from achieving each exercise, and you get even more benefit as you continue to incorporate them into your daily routine.

This is a great book on the Biltmore Estate and the family. It is a book of photographs with captions. It is very interesting and progresses through history. You see photos of the grounds before the home was built, the home as it was being built, and then pictures of all the family inside and around the home. Fun read!!

Biltmore Estate is a delightful picture book featuring photographs which were taken on special occasionsat the house and surrounding area of the residents of the famous estate. The family membersshown become more than just names of members of a family that was important many years ago.

Excellent read, purchased after visiting, this and other books filled in some of the blanks from our guided tours and visit to the Biltmore Estate and Asheville, NC.

The gift shops at the biltmore have a very sad selection about this. So glad I bought this!!!!

I went to see the home,really it's a castle. The book told me alot more than the tour did. I didn't know aboutmthemdairy part of the estate or about the family history. So this book is a,must BEFORE seeing the home.

I ordered this book after a visit to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. It reminded me of all the wonderful things I had seen and taught me more about the creation of this stunning home.

This is an excellent book about The Biltmore. I've already toured the home and grounds but this provided further information that was very interesting.
