About the Author
Roger Priddy left school at 16 with just one qualification―in art. He went to Berkshire College of Art and Design and trained as an illustrator. His first job in children's books was working with the publisher Peter Usborne, at Usborne Publishing, and then he worked with Peter Kindersley at Dorling Kindersley, where he spent 16 years. Priddy became Creative Director of DK's Children's Division and was Managing Director of the children's mass market publisher Funfax when it was acquired by DK. In 2000, he created Priddy Books with John Sargent at St Martin's Press to create innovative and imaginative titles for children, from first books for babies through early reference titles for older children. Since then, over 30 million copies of Roger's 200 plus books have sold worldwide, with five of his books―My Big Animal, My Big Truck, Happy Baby Words, Happy Baby Colors and Puppy and Friends―each selling over one million copies. He is also the author of Big Board First 100 Words; Big Board Books Colors, ABC, Numbers; and Bright Baby Noisy Monsters. His creativity has been recognized with numerous industry awards. I picked this up for 2 reasons. First off I was tired of my twin girls getting books about what noises different animals make and wanted something a bit more grounded in stuff they see every day. And secondly the number of 5-star reviews.But I'm afraid 'First 100 Machines' left me pretty disappointed. Each double page spread has several small pictures of different trains, cars, planes etc and a gives each one a name. And that's about it. No information about them, no additional pictures, no interesting graphics, just 1 photo each and a list. And the photos don't really offer any way to differentiate some of the machines since they're not in scale.And my girls seem to sense the laziness, this book does not hold their interest at all.Some of the names are a bit odd, usually Priddy just gives a generic example and name, but for some odd reason Jeeps, Hummers and the Eurostar are specifically named. Some common vehicles like limos, minivans and station wagons are missing but obscure ones are included. And does anyone really call compact cars coupes?Now I've given negative reviews before and been surprised a few months later when the girls' tastes changed and a book became a sudden hit, so I may revisit this review, but for now 100 Machines leaves me unimpressed.
I don't know what it is about 2 year old boys, but when they reach that age they become fascinated with machinery. I've experienced it with all of my nephews, and the latest addition to our family is no different.This is a large-size, full-color, board book - meaning the pages are thick and sturdy. All it consists of are photographs of real motorized machinery, taken from various angles, with the names of each vehicle shown. There's a page devoted to types of cars, types of trains, types of boats, types of airplanes, types of construction vehicles, types of farm vehicles and types of emergency/city vehicles. So it covers all the bases and is full of images to bring joy to a little boy's heart.My nephew reads this book every night with his father. Then he reads it over with me when I babysit him. There is just something so adorable seeing a 2 year old seriously pointing out a combine harvester or a dump truck as if it was the most important thing in the world. Not to mention the fact that it's a good item to use if you want the little one to have some quiet time. So if you've got a little boy in your family, or one that you need a gift for, I'd give this book two thumbs up.
Great pictures and plenty of variety...maybe too much? Maybe just too much for what I was looking for. So many different kinds of vehicles and names that it kind of numbs you to them. All the different "trucks" just become "truck" instead of remembering some classics like "fire truck", "dump truck".Nevertheless, it is well put together and the images are high quality. Maybe better suited for the preschooler to 1st grade when considering the variety and differentiation of different vehicle classes.
This book is really cute and fun. My husband is an aircraft mechanic by trade, but he loves machines of all kinds and our infant daughter has already spent quite a bit of time in our garage watching him work on the truck or tractor. I thought this would be the perfect book for them to share at bedtime. This book is filled with bright, colorful photos and is a great way to introduce your little ones to vehicles and machines they'd commonly see.
Bought this to replace a copy that somehow was destroyed at my grandsons’ house. It was a favorite of my older g-son, so I really wanted his little brother to enjoy it too! Nice sturdy book with lots of pix. Great for recognition and identification practice.
This has been my son's favorite book for months now. He LOVES trucks and trains, so I knew this would be a good addition to his book collection, but he has learned so much more now! The pages are colorful and large, and it is definitely my kiddo's go-to book!
My 2 year old son LOVES this book. The pictures are excellent and show a diverse range of machines. The pages are huge and thick, so it is perfect for little hands. The cover has been very durable as this book as been everywhere with us. This book is a must-have for anyone with a toddler who loves machines and wants to know their names (as long as the parent can read along, of course!).
Made the perfect gift for a 2 year old who love trucks. As far as the bomb squad truck, it is a truck that exists so I see nothing wrong with it being in the book. I asked the parent before purchasing to make sure they were okay with it.
This is actually our second purchase—my son “loved†his first copy to death before his second birthday. (That’s not to say the book isn’t sturdy, just that my kid is the human equivalent of a jackhammer.) Awesome book for the budding trick lover!
