This is a wonderful book! The idea of learning to skate might seem overwhelming to an adult beginner, but Ms. Levy breaks down the process into clear and manageable steps. Adult Figure Skating 101: Ready, set, glide...is a great learning tool for the complete newcomer to skating, as well as a valuable reference for those who have already begun the process. Highly Recommended!

This is one of those books that most new adult skaters will get something out of. Depending on the specific skill being taught, its descriptions and illustrations are either adequate or lacking. Someone who uses this text to augment online video tutorials will likely find it very useful. Indeed, this is one of the better books for people who are unable to comprehend highly detailed written instructions. The basic information about skates, safety and rink layout is perfect for those folks. The area in which this book shines above others is in the initial pep talk for beginners. Ms Levy ably explains away all the common excuses that hold beginners back. Probably the strongest criticism of this book is that it is possibly too optimistic in what it tries to accomplish in 107 pages. The more complex spins and jumps probably deserve more attention than they receive. Perhaps by including so many advanced skills this book will serve as encouragement to push readers harder and seek more information and instruction. Please understand that this is an unintimidating and worthwhile book that most new skaters will benefit from reading.

It only contains basic descriptions of the elements, but misses key information on how to make them work. Very disappointing!

The book is concise and well illustrated. I am an adult student who started ice skating in mid 40s. This book shows me what I have to learn as an adult student who are not planning to compete in the Olympics.

Just not a fan of dates in my recipes. Wish I had known this book was mainly that.

I wanted to wait to review this book until I'd made several recipes. Suffice it to say, I'm well past "several." Off the top of my head, we've had Chocolate, Rocky Road, Fried Banana, Mint Chocolate Swirl (my son thought I said Mint Chocolate SQUIRREL and boy was he relieved when he saw what it really was), Butter Pecan, Swiss Almond, Strawberry, and I have some Salted Caramel Chocolate Chunk ready to freeze later today.I stopped eating dairy several years ago after a Whole30 taught me that my gut doesn't like it. We recently discovered that our four-year-old daughter has a dairy allergy but dearly loved milk products, so this book seemed like a natural purchase for us for this hot Texas summer.I've tried numerous "Paleo" or coconut-milk-based ice creams from other websites and sources. The ice creams I have tried from this book are hands-down the BEST. My husband, who used to sit in his chair with a half-gallon of commercial dairy ice cream and a spoon, even loves what I've made from this book. The ice creams are creamy and satisfying without any overwhelming honey or coconut flavors that I've found in other recipes, and little to no graininess. I love that the ice creams I've made are date-sweetened, and I think the combination of coconut and almond milks is smart! These ice creams are, for the most part, simple to make. I can whip up some vanilla ice cream base in seriously under five minutes. I doubt I'll be butchering my own young coconuts to make coconut cream any time soon, but even the ice creams with several steps, like Rocky Road for which I had to make my own marshmallow fluff, have easy-to-follow directions.I'm so happy I went ahead and bought this book so we could enjoy it all summer, and my dairy-loving but intolerant family are thrilled too. I look forward to diving into MORE books by Kelly!!

This is the best paleo friendly ice cream cookbook I've seen so far. Usually paleo ice cream has a strong coconut flavor that you can't get rid of no matter what you do, vanilla ice cream actually tastes like coconut, strawberry ends up being coconut-strawberry, etc. This author makes a dedicated effort to eliminate or cover up the coconut flavor by mixing the coconut milk/cream with some other kind of non-dairy "milk" in every recipe, and IT WORKS! I made the chai tea ice cream and it did not have a coconut flavor! It also has a better texture than is typical for homemade nondairy ice cream.Reasons for not giving it 5 stars--the ice cream freezes rock solid when you put the leftovers in the freezer, and you need to leave it on the counter for half an hour before you can even get a spoon in the container. Also every single recipe uses medjool dates as a sweetener, which average around $8/lb and make your homemade ice cream a lot more expensive than just buying a pint at the supermarket.

I've used several of these recipes. The best thing about this book besides the great pictures, is that they lead you by the hand and get you going. I had a Cuisinart ice cream maker that I never used because I quit eating anything with sugar because of joint issues. I could not figure out how to keep the ice cream from getting hard as a rock once it was put in the freezer. This book gives you a few tips, but I learned more on the Internet. 1. Add a tablespoon or two of coconut oil to these recipes, and just for good measure, I throw in a tablespoon or two of vodka (chocolate vodka for chocolate ice cream--peach schnapps for peach ice cream.) The main thing is these keep the ice cream from getting rock-hard. Also, something I did with the purchased coconut-chocolate ice cream, was I put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. When using the Cuisinart ice cream maker, you MUST put the bowl base in the freezer for 24 hours for good results. The chocolate ice cream is the best I've tasted so far.

I cannot begin to express how excited I was when I recieved this recipe book. I could have cried!I have Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EOE), so I have many food intolerances/allergies. I can honestly have about 99% of the recipes in this book. I made my first recipe today (basic vanilla) and let me tell you it was AMAZING!!! I couldn't believe how naturally sweet it tasted from the dates. I'm in heaven and can't wait to try more recipes.

Great book! Lots of different flavors of frozen dairy free ice cream like pistachio, fried banana, and amaretto cherry... plus the traditional vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Love the way recipes tell you how you can change to various sweeteners like agave, honey, or stevia and how you can also vary the type non-dairy milk like coconut, cashew, hemp, etc.... Pictures are beautiful and recipes easy to follow.

Every single one of the recipes I have tried from this book are GOOD. Creamy, delicious ice cream without dairy or many other allergens! It is TRUE! Also, not much "sugar" or sweetener use. Highly recommended!

My family combined has a bunch of allergies (nuts, corn, gluten, dairy, eggs, etc etc) and using this book we can come up with a birthday treat everyone can enjoy. It's wonderful to know what exactly is in your food, and the recipes work great with our ice cream maker.

I will admit I've only made a couple of recipes so far, but they have been totally tasty! I love the fact that they are dairy free, since I am finding as I get older, dairy products just don'seem to agree with me anymore. The best part is with these recipes I don't have to sacrifice flavor or texture! They are just as yummy and rich as their dairy counterparts. If you need to steer clear of dairy this book may be perfect for you.

This book reads like my grandmother used to talk - or like a history book. The contents are amazing, and the author does refer back with reminders. "Joe Blow - the one who fell in the mud puddle in the previous chapter." However it is heavy on science and on names. It does not read like a novel. The movie took facts and mixed them up a bit. The events happened, but the true events happened over three decades and not necessarily to the person in the movie. I like knowing that kind of thing. Kathryn didn't have the bathroom issue - she was so light that she just used the regular bathrooms without comment. But the event happened at another time to another woman. There were other indignities that weren't brought up in the movie. The last third of the book is references - this is seriously a history book.

My comments are somewhat bias since Katherine Johnson is my aunt. I have seen the movie twice and read the book. My preference is the book mostly because of the additional information provided about Aunt Katherine. Many movie goers who only see the movie will miss out on a number of opportunities to see more realistically Aunt Katherine's nature, attitudes, and life's perspectives on work, family, and race. The movie is done very well and I commend all those involved in its production including the talented stars. It is a case of getting one slice of pie when you could get two slices. I suggest you eat WELL! ATBroady

I saw the movie before I read the book, and I am honestly not sure whether that was a good or bad thing. I loved the movie, and I loved the book, but they are very different.Generally, the book is a very fast-paced and interesting read about the black women who worked at the Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, and their many and varied contributions to the field of aeronautical and astronautical research. It is part biography, part history of NASA, part history of segregation, part history of the civil rights movement, part history of the Virginia peninsula, and part history of women's rights. It is absolutely fascinating. That being said, the book is very different from the movie, so don't go into it expecting them to be the same. The movie is deeply touching, but it is actually fairly inaccurate, and it has been pretty aggressively whitewashed (see re: the Kevin Costner character). I think it is good to both see the movie and read the book, because one of the critical differences, and the difference that I think is missed entirely by the movie (to its great detriment) is the way in which issues of segregation were actually tackled at Langley. The movie makes it appear that enlightened white men of power were responsible for Langley's integration, when in fact the integration of Langley was almost entirely borne organically and of necessity. The book does a good job of explaining this, whereas that aspect of the movie is almost entirely fictionalized. I thought the movie took away some of the women's victories in this area (Katherine Johnson, for example, never went to the "colored" bathroom. She just used the regular, unlabeled bathroom, and no one ever told her not to), but the book gives the women more credit for their small yet trailblazing acts of defiance. One other note: the book actually covers quite a bit of complex scientific detail, but it is entirely readable to the layperson.I highly, highly recommend this book.

Hidden Figures has garnered much attention for being the heretofore forgotten story of the African-American women who helped build NASA (or to be more exact, the NASA field center at Langley). The media has boiled the tale of these women down to the oft-used cliche "heroes"; Shetterley's narrative digs beyond that.Sure, Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, et al are amazing, inspiring, and strong, but their own modesty over their roles in NACA/NASA history is telling: like many black pioneers of the Jim Crow era, they didn't step up for the attention or accolades. They stepped up to be "the first" in order to pave the way for those who would come behind them.Shetterley deftly reveals these cross-generational ties at Langley, as well as how for African-Americans, the professional is often the personal when it came to representation and community. The portions of the book that were the most fascinating to me were those pertaining to the links forged by the black community in the Southern Virginia area, and how they intersected with employment and residency in Hampton as the 20th century progressed.Shetterley's prose shined the best on the minutia of the women's lives, but the parts about NACA/NASA were just as interesting--and Shetterley's explanations of the mathematics and aeronautics is masterful. It was never pedantic, yet never overly simplified. As I reached the end, I was disappointed there weren't more pages, but also even hungrier for more stories about the intersection of race, gender, and science!Get this book! It is an excellent companion to Nathalia Holt's Rise of the Rocket Girls and Lily Koppel's The Astronaut Wives Club, for a comparison of the different experiences of women in the Space Race.

My son is barely 2 years old and has speech delays. He can't even say 'mom' yet. That led me to order any sort of learning tools I could think of to help him before starting speech therapy.I've had these a month or so now and feel like I've had a good amount of time using them to give a solid review. I'm going to give it 5 stars, and here's why:1. Packaging is thick, sturdy and has a Velcro closure2. The price is fantastic for what you receive3. The bright colors and fun textures on the cards strike interest kids of all ages4. On the back of each card are questions to ask the child once simply naming the animal on the picture is too easy5. The cards themselves are very thick, rigid and can withstand a good beating.I do daycare (and other children come to play) and have kids ages 6 months to 10 years spend lots of times using the cards. The older kids made games out of them including a weird version of 'go fish'. I've had a baby munch on the corner of a couple cards and they didn't get all soggy and tear because they're so thick. My rambunctious 2 year old hasn't managed to bend any of the cards yet, while our 'Baby Einstein discovery cards' are mostly bent so badly that you cannot see some of the pictures. My son now name 3 of the animals, can make the noises that most of them make, and can find a specific animal in the stack if I name one. That is amazing progress! The day after getting these cards, i ordered the 'first words' set by the same company, and while they are good, we definitely prefer the animals.

The following reviews and images are for both the DK My First Touch & Feel Animal cards, and the DK My First Touch and Feel picture cards. I decided to combine both reviews into one because-for whatever reason- it's not letting me post 2 separate reviews. The Animal cards images are labeled with "AN" and the first words cards images are labeled with "FW". Each set comes with 17 cards. To get all 34 cards, you must purchase the 2 different sets---------------------This review is of the DK My First Touch & Feel Animal Picture Cards (AN)I bought this card set for my non verbal 3 year old son. He currently is enrolled in the Early Childhood Special Education program. I'm constantly looking for activities that will grab his interest as well as assist him in the various areas he struggles in. This does that.Included in this purchase is 17 large cards (16 touch and feel, 1 card with suggestions on how to best use the cards). They all come in a sturdy storage case that can easily be tossed in a toy box or set on a book shelf. Please see included image. The included flash cards are:CrabPuppyMonkeyFishCatRabbitSheepParrotCowTurtleTigerElephantDuckDolphinHorseZebraPlease see included images (labeled "AN") for examplesThe images on the front of the cards are not illustrations, but are actual pictures of the items. On the backside of the card are suggestions for questions to engage your child, as well as spellings and pronunciations of the word in other languages. Please see included images for example. We use these cards to work on speech as well as animal identification. The cards are extremely sturdy and have endured a lot of abuse since we got them.Although the box it comes with is perfectly suitable for storing your cards, I keep them in a plastic container with a latch. This is so that I can store multiple sets all together.-----------------------This review is of the DK My First Words Touch & Feel Picture Cards: First words (FW)I bought this card set for my non verbal 3 year old son. WOW instant hit with my 15 month old. Immediately purchased 2 other versions. The cards are nice and sturdy, the colors are bright, and each card has a spot with a different texture or material for your toddler to feel (for example the jelly has a spot that's sticky, the corn has grooves and ridges). I love that on the back of each card they have ideas for the adult on how to help your child learn with the cards from suggestions of questions to ask when they are first starting out, working all the way to expanding on spelling related games as they get older, and even going as far as to include translations in Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin if you really want to be that over achiever. I love this because not only does this keep the cards relevant and engaging for your child as they get older, but it gives people with maybe less experience playing with younger children great ideas on how to use these cards. The cards fit nicely in their cardboard enclosure that is secured shut with Velcro, so they are easy to put away or take with you on trips. My only complaint would be that since this is the "First Words" version, I wish one or two of the items which are maybe not as common were replaced with items that would be more in line with actual toddlers first words...and really this is more nit picking than a complaint.

These cards are WONDERFUL!! My son is now 4 and has autism and has not yet said a single word, but we have 4 different packs of these cards that he just loves and we use to teach him words. Even though he doesn't speak, we know he knows what things are because we can ask him to find a card of whatever it is and he'll pull it out and show us. We've owned these since he was diagnosed at 18 months and most of them have held up really really well! He also has sensory issues and loves how some of them are textured. For those of you who are church goers, these cards are something great to take to church because they come in a great velcro box and they're QUIET! Very pleased with these cards! Highly recommend!
