I was raised in the Winter Hill neighborhood all my life and have always admired Somerville for its diversity and character. I feel a sense of wholeness and comfort here in Somerville. The history of this great city is important to me as well ! Im glad I came across this book when I did Billerica HOC,(YES I made a stupid mistake). It's no fun there and good reading is hard to come by. I'd have to hide my Citizen Somerville book under my pillow due to the high demand of readers there but anyway Im not trying to write a book here, just a review. Growing up in Somerville in the late 80's early 90's I'd always hear about the "Winter Hill Gang" but no one really knew what the hell they were talkin about, just that they were a tough gang. So once I picked this book up I couldn't put it down. It had its ups and downs in it's real life stories of both men and woman but will have you laugh out loud at times as well. Kudos to the authors for it honesty and easy reading, a damn good job for there first book ! I had to pick up a second copy of Citizen Somerville for the family to read since I don't want any creases or folds in mine or for that matter "cheese puff stains". Plus I had Bobby go out of his way to sign my book as well. Thanks again Bobby & Elayne for a wonderful and truthful read. -Danny

I grew up in Somerville, Massachusetts. We all knew of the "Winter Hill Gang" but we didn't really know them until this book. Raw, exposing all, beautifully written in the vernacular it should be written in. this is a riveting story of how the families of the men and women involved survived. The interviews are straight forward and nothing is covered up. The women in the story will tell you the wrenching story of the lives they led, never knowing from day to day if their husbands are coming home. Bobby Martini gets to your heart. He doesn't hide the facts. He lays it all out for you but also shows you the "family" side that each man lived. Once I started, I couldn't put it down until I had read it all. Do yourself a favor, get the book, get a comfy chair, a drink and even a snack, because this book will not leave your hands until the last page!!BEST BOOK EVER!!

Tip Oneill was credited with saying all politics is local so I guess all crime is local too. Interesting account of the dealings of Howie Winter, crime boss of Somerville Ma for many years. You wonder if it was worth it as Howie spent many years behind bars and when he was free worried about the cops and his enemies. Somerville Ma, is a tight neighborhood type of town, where everyone knows everyone. If you wanted to get something done, you had to know someone whether it was legal or not. The writing was ok, but the story is worth telling. Read it and real life crime will kick your butt.

I read the prologue online, and I couldn't find a copy fast enough. I worked for Ellen Brogna years ago,and knew Gary Winter. Mr Martini & Ms Keratsis have captured his essence, in those brief few words, and I was exited! I was not disappointed! This was REAL! I have read many books on Whitey Bulger and company, most of them bored me to tears. CITIZEN SOMERVILLE is different. NOT ABOUT WHITEY!!!! Captivating. Real. HONEST. If you think you have read it all, you are wrong. This book is so different!I couldn't put it down! This is not a "Poor me!" story. This is not a blood and gore "Stephen King type" tell all.It's not a plea of innocence.CITIZEN SOMERVILLE tells of the humans and humanity behind the headlines. The trials and tribulations of growing up in a world, most of us think we know, but do not. Boston's infamous Irish Mob. It is seen through the eyes of two men of different generations, and the women around them. The understanding, self accountability, and wisdom of surviving chaos and heartbreak of a way of life foreign to all but those that lived it. You will laugh, you will cry, you will understand. To a time when parts of a Boston neighborhood known as Winter Hill and some of the Boston Irish Business men who lived there gained a rep as wild as the one the west once held. Mr. Martini with Ms. Keratsis tells a brilliant story of what it was like growing up in Winter Hill in the 60's thru the 70's during a bloody time when a feud between 2 Irish factions erupted. He graciously introduces us to his world and shares some very poignant and I have to believe, painful accounts of just how tough life was for a kid growing up into that life. There are also some disturbing accounts that really prove how rough it was for those who were on the periphery as well: wives, girl friends, children. Mr. Martini shares some amusing stories that also show just how very human and loving (in their own way) these Irish "business men" were to their families and friends. Seriously, you will enjoy this book.

This was a really interesting and exciting book. The hunt for Eichmann had so many dedicated and talented people involved, and so many twists and turns, it's better than any fiction story. You can't make this stuff up. The book covers Eichmann's life and evil deeds plus the amazing story of how he escaped the clutches of people searching for him for 15 years after the war -- finally tracking him to a remote town in Argentina. THEN, there's the exciting problem of abducting him and getting him to Israel to stand trial -- bravery and dedication from all involved. In the end, his capture and trial did much to publicize and elucidate the true dimensions of the Holocaust to the world, so 6 million souls were not written off and forgotten.I found this book to be a page turner. I had to keep re-charging my Kindle because I had to know how it all turned out.Good job, thoroughly researched and very well written.

I had read a very brief story on the capture of Adolf Eichmann in Reader's Digest years ago which, after reading this masterful narrative, fell far short of giving a full and well-deserved rich portrait of the many years long effort to discover whether Eichmann was alive or dead, and if alive, where in the world he might be. The work of the Israeli intelligence agency in doggedly pursuing Eichmann, planning his capture, and ultimately putting him on trial (and consummating his punishment) is amazing. I've read many books on WWII and Nazi Germany's genocide of the Jews, and was very aware of Eichmann's role, but this page turning narrative never misses a beat in taking us from the war years through the post-war trauma and search for Nazi war criminals, and the dogged efforts of the Mossad and others in doing so. Even after reading so many books on the subject, it is still incomprehensible how the German army could have become so cruelly intent on treating the Jews as nothing more than animals to be slaughtered - yet it happened. "I was only following orders" is the most oft-cited response of those captured and held accountable for their crimes. You will find edge of your seat suspense as the Israeli team closes in on Eichmann in Argentina and learn every detail of their extensive planning to not only capture him, but get him safely out of the country to return to Israel for trial. A brilliant non-stop book.

I watched the recent movie Operation Finale, and decide to read this book to get more information about the capture of Eichmann. The book exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it. The focus of this book is obviously the mission to capture Eichmann, but the author gives the reader much more: a concise background about Eichmann's important role in implementing the Holocaust as an enthusiastic Nazi SS Officer, a fascinating summary of his capture by and escape from Allied forces, his travel to and life in Argentina, and also an insightful description of Eichmann's trial, an important event in the history of Israel. The actual capture mission is the core of the book, and is very detailed and well-written. There are quite a few differences from the movie, and we learn how professional and dedicated the Mossad operatives were in real life. This was a daring and high risk operation in a hostile country. The author lets the reader draw his/her own conclusions about Eichmann's motives as a key cog in the Nazi's attempt to murder all of the Jews in Europe. It is important to remember that such evil exists, and learn how to prevent it from happening again.

Wow! I just finished this book and really enjoyed it. I appreciate how Bascomb went to so many different sources to cull his information and put it together into one captivating tome.I read almost everything I can find on WWII, especially relating to the Holocaust as the topic fascinates me. I feel like it somehow honors those who perished in a very small way to learn what I can about their lives and their experiences. In spite of all of the reading I have already done on the subject, this book added plenty of new dimension and understanding.In particular, I appreciate Bascomb's description of Germany, the Catholic Church, the United States, Great Britain, Argentina, etc, and the roles they took on with regard to finding Nazis after the war, and how the Eichmann trial impacted those approaches. I also gained a new appreciation for the formation of the nation of Israel, and how it came to be.In addition to appealing to history buffs, this is an excellent book for those who like spy thrillers. It was a page turner and many nights I could not put it down! Well worth the read.

I am an experienced LRCC and PS user but the programs are so complex that I need a periodic refresher. This book fit the bill nicely. I bought the ebook version, loaded it into my ipad and I propped the reader in front of me while I did the exercises on my computer. I find this arrangement much easier than trying to maneuver a large paper volume with one hand and working the computer with the other. Most of the exercises are well thought out and were easy to follow but I'm not sure I would recommend this to a beginner.

Now that Adobe offers the Creative Cloud Photography Plan, which includes a monthly subscription to both Photoshop and Lightroom, for under $10 a month, many photographers are wondering how to fit these two programs together for the best possible images. The two can be integrated so that each does what it can do best. Lightroom is great for global adjustments (as well as other functions like cataloging and slide shows) while Photoshop allows combining images, local adjustments and retouching. After discussing the benefits of using both Lightroom and Photoshop, the author considers some of the basic functions of the Library and Develop modules of Lightroom. She then discusses the roundtrip workflow from Lightroom to Photoshop and back again. Snider then provides deeper instruction on moving Lightroom processed images to Photoshop for combining, selecting and masking, retouching and special effects. She finishes by indicating how to export images and very briefly touches on the other Lightroom modules.The book uses tutorials that involve the downloading of images from a website and then detailed instructions for processing the images, first in Lightroom and then in Photoshop. This is one of the most practical ways to learn the functioning of the software and the author makes it better by explaining the why of the various steps, as well as the pitfalls along the way.At first I was skeptical about the instruction level. For Lightroom, only the most rudimentary of instructions are given about the Development module, and indeed, if one wants to learn to learn to adjust tonality and color well in Lightroom, one ought to read books like Scott Kelby's The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter) and Jeff Schewe's The Digital Negative: Raw Image Processing in Lightroom, Camera Raw, and Photoshop (2nd Edition). I was surprised by how cautious the author was about directly downloading photos from the camera card into Lightroom, preferring separate download and import processes.The instructions for Photoshop did not mention some basic steps like establishing Photoshop preferences. However, as her tutorials moved the images into Photoshop, her instructions were detailed enough so that one could make use of the important features of Photoshop to do what Photoshop does best, and be comfortable in that software. (I would still recommend that one also read a book aimed only at Photoshop to make the best use of the software.)Over the years I've developed my own regular uses of Photoshop for roundtrips, but I was astonished to find out that functions that I had not looked at in years, like the Liquefy function, had become so easy to use, and ought to be included in my regular arsenal. On the other hand, I was surprised to see strong advocacy for the Pen tool and no mention of the Lasso tool. Once one gets into using Photoshop, it pays to learn all of the selection tools.In any event, this book pleasantly surprised me. It told enough about the two programs to show the benefits of integrating them, and the tutorials were highly successful in instructing, particularly about the functions of Photoshop that benefit the integration.Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge.

Great for those who want self paced structured instruction. I learned the basics, which greatly increase my post production efficiency.

Working through this book increased my Lightroom and, especially, my Photoshop abilities immensely. The exercises are easy to follow and reproduce by starting with the photo files available by download.

A big improvement on last year's edition. Worth buying.
