This is a beautifully illustrated story about three children and their grandfather who, whenever they come to visit, takes them into the attic, where he opens an old Vaudeville trunk, takes out his tap shoes, hat, cane, and other objects, and proceeds to entertain them with dance and magic tricks. The children clap and enjoy the show, and the book shows that there is a special bond between children and grandparents, who take the time to play with them, entertain them, and tell them about the past.Where the story doesn't ring true for me is when the children say things like: "But as he turns off the attic light, Grandpa glances back up the stairs, and we wonder how much he really misses that time on the vaudeville stage, when he was a song and dance man." This seems like a very adult observation.

This is a wonderful book! It’s an older book, but the one I just purchased looks never used/read. Slightly aged, but excellent condition. I was thrilled to find it. I have the copy I purchased 20+ years ago for my son & I read it to a little 2 year old boy that really liked the story so I wanted to give him his own copy as my son’s copy will go to his children some day.

With a peep into the past, it's also the best of good old-fashioned values. A really warm, sweet, and simple story of just having fun - as a family, intergenerationally and without electronic noise. And the book is not heavy-handed, but the story sends a message about fun - and how we can all create fun without props and just our own voices and body and each other - is a good, and needed, one for both children and adults. I bought it for my 28-month-old and highly recommend this book - it leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling inside and is just a good, clean, nice story.

This is a book I read to my children when they were small and now that my daughter has a four year old she wanted it to read to her. How wonderful to have a book that stands the test of time. I could not find our old copy and I was so happy to find it still available for this next generation to enjoy.

Love this book! I bought several of them to use in a Literature Circle for some of my higher reading 1st graders! I was first introduced to this book when I was student teaching in 2nd grade 13 years ago. Just a great book!!

I am captivated by the art of Elisa Kleven. I buy every book she has written and/or illustrated. This book is very special because it changes the dynamics of a traditional story for children but also teaches them about San Francisco and many of the special places that exist there. Elisa Kleven's art is so accessible, so inviting, so whimsical and yet it is also real. I have been to most of the places she covers, and had fun revisiting them in this book. Children will be charmed by the rhythm of this story but also by the enchanting places that she chooses to cover. I also think the book can be used for geography lessons, creative writing, and more. Ask the children to make up their own story about a gingerbread boy. Find photos of places you might want to visit in your town, or where you have visited and enjoyed special adventures. As a retired school librarian I always value books that are multidimensional, that are engaging, that give the reader many more ideas to follow up on in their own imaginations.

If you love San Francisco or plan to visit with a child this is a wonderful book for you. The adventures of this particular Gingerbread Boy fill the pages with images that are dear to all visitors of City. The tale in new and fresh with story line that will apeal to children and adults who love to share books with children. (Spoiler alert a happy ending). You can spend hours looking at just one page of Ms. Kleven's intricate art. You can trace the journey through the landmarks page and map. And you can even make up your own delicious gingerbread with the recipe provided. This is hours of fun for those of us lucky enough to have children to share it with. This is a book that will last long beyond the official 4-8 age range listed.

I'm always excited when new books come out by Elisa Kleven. Her colorful, whimsical illustrations are so enchanting! Each time you look at a page, you find something new. My children and I could spend forever finding little vignettes inside each one. In The Horribly Hungry Gingerbread Boy, the story is as much fun as the illustrations, especially in the simple, rhyming text. I love the ending, which celebrates Kleven's typically warm feeling of community and mix of different cultures. A bonus at the end is Kleven's recipe for gingerbread cookies and a glossary of San Francisco landmarks.

I love all of Elisa's books! This one is so special to me. I'm from the bay area and it's such a perfect gift to give kids. I've literally bought over 20 of this book for presents. The art is so unique to Elisa Kleven in details and style. Her stories always teach a lesson. I've worked in many schools throughout the US and constantly run across a Kleven book. Keep them coming, Elisa, WE LOVE YOU!

Our two daughters were raised outside of San Francisco and both live out of state and each has two small children. One read it to her three year old while we Skyped and she enjoyed being in San Francisco via the book. The illustrations are amazing.

Not my favorite of hee books, but still an easy 5 stars. I love the way Elisa Kleven sees the world and am glad she has the skill to be abke to share her vision. The kids like the books too which is a plus.

My Thoughts-What an amazing picture book! It is full of not only fun rhymes (that work), but also San Francisco landmarks and colorful illustrations. I enjoyed the closeness to the original story, but like most kids, I was always sad with how the original ended, with the gingerbread boy being eatin'. This story takes a fresh twist, with a still naughty gingerbread boy, but one who learns his lesson and lives to make amends and have a friend. Splendid!The illustrations are GORGEOUS! They are full of color, almost mosaic like, with patterns and collages. They take you on a tour of San Francisco, from China Town to the Golden Gate Bridge. They are so festive that the whole book is a party of style and prints. A delight for the eyes.Added to the back of the book is an actual map and details of the landmarks covered in the book. Kids are going to love this one. 5 stars!

I visited the Hermitage in September 2011 and was in awe of the splendor and beauty of this spectacular once palace. I wanted a book that would do justice to the beauty I experienced in walking through this museum, I wanted to share with my family not just the grandeur of this wonderful museum but I wanted them to see the exhibits as well. The books in the museum were beautiful but I just didn't have the extra weight allowed in my luggage (always a problem when I travel). I arrived back in the states and immediately went to Amazon.com to do some research....this book is every bit as beautiful as any in the actual museum and is exactly what I was looking for. This is a book to leave out and let others enjoy....I have a room full of art and museum books but this one is taking center stage. You won't be disappointed...

This is a beautiful boxed set of two large volumes with wonderful photos and text. We purchased it as a keepsake after our trip to the Hermitage this past summer. We enjoyed looking through the books and rediscovering the masterpieces we saw in person. The box has a slight gold sheen to it that makes it look very luxurious and expensive. We've displayed it prominently in our living room. I would recommend it as a pre-trip purchase to help you decide what galleries you want to focus on during your visit to the Hermitage since it is a massive museum. It would be easy to miss an important masterpiece if you don't have a plan.

I am trying to collect all painting books with this kind quality. Each time in the travel tour, we never have enough time to go over the painting carefully in the museum(s), not mention to read the comments for the pictures. It is worth to keep this kind book for a life time. Whenever I have time, I can go back to read again.

Magnifiently printed, bound (with a jacket for both books) and delivered. Highly recommend this seller for quality and promptness. The books are the next best thing to visiting The Hermitage collections. Definitely a collectible item for those who love art, palaces and exquisite everything. Rizzoli, as usual, does justice to his top-notch reputation. Books are spellbinding in every respect and they will enrich further my forthcoming trip to The Hermitage, St. Petersburg and Moscow.

An excellent compilation of art and history of this world famous collection. Having been there and attempted to view the entire collection...too much to absorb in one short visit...this 2-volume set is jewel to read and reread after I have returned.

Visited St, Petersburg in 2008 and spent two days going thru the Hermitage (need to take at least that much time) but didn't leave with any art books these books filled that void their big and heavy but are very comprehensive and have beautiful pictures of many of the paintings and sculptures I seen and photographed myself the rooms and palace are a work of art also just a beautiful experience if your going to see this museum or have already been there this is a great set of books to have to either bring back memories or give you an idea of what to expect on your visit.

Bought it as a gift for a friend to commemorate his recent trip to Russia, and it was a huge success!! This is a beautiful set, quite comprehensive in subject matter and exquisitely finished.

Can't go to Russia but want to see what's in the hermitage? Then this book is for you! Very large, since it includes everything!

Having grown up very close to the Charlotte to Rochester track, I remember the smoke rising above the houses across the street from my bedroom window. With friends, we walked the tracks to the Lake (Ontario) and up the other side of the Genesee past the coal loader, which was active with a steam engine and the coal shaker that could be heard for miles. The book is full of interesting pictures and information, especially for those who might remember some of it. A friend and I went into Rochester and rode one of the last "subway" trolleys just days before ending passenger operations. For anyone interested in a piece of area history this is a concise, interesting and inexpensive way to do it. "Rails in Rochester" is just one of an excellent series of historical books provided by the publishers covering towns and industries over a wide area of the country, with many here in New England.

I especially like the photos taken near my current employer, The Gleason Works. Some of the old tracks are still in the floor of the old foundry area.
