I love this book because, to me, it seems to embody Einstein's advice that "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler." Mr. Stovall's concise treatise wastes few words, and is precise and quantitive, but never pedantic and always fun to read. Starting with the simplest possible sector rotation strategy, he leads us through a natural exploration of "seven" variations. Most can be applied either to leading sectors or to leading industries. All are back-tested against the S&P 500 in terms of both annual growth and standard deviation.My only complaint: Stovall's industry strategy is built around determining the 10 leading GICS sub-industries based on trailing twelve month performance. This is less easy than it sounds -- Fidelity, for example, reports data for the 67 GICS "industries" rather than the 154 GICS "sub-industries". I subscribe to S&P Outlook Online, which does provide sub-industry data, but doesn't provide TTM comparisons, nor does it provide a direct comparison of all subindustries.

This book hits on a major topic of interest in today's modern market - ETF's and how to prudently create a modern portfolio using them w/o just sitting back and employing the buy-hold-forget theory. And for others, trading equities and trying to pick winners while avoiding the losers is simply too difficult and time consuming, especially if one has another day job! Targeting sectors and industries just makes sense and I thought his "momentum" style of investing was better counsel than what I have ever heard from the various "professional" investment advisors I have used at the big brokerage houses using the "diversified pie chart approach". All many of these guys do is take your money and invest it with money managers (pass the buck and all decision making except annual rebalancing) who, in turn, make the decisions - all while each cog in the wheel takes a point here and a point there in fees. As we all know, that diversified pie chart approach (large cap, small cap, int'l, growth, etc.) has been pretty "correlated" in the past decade - and not in a good way!I think some people missed the author's "tongue in cheek" humor and took some of his words too literally (like the fact that he is an impatient investor, etc). I personally found his comments humorous - as much as can be hoped for in a book of this nature discussing pretty dry material.The fact that Sam provides an opinion in the end is a real bonus and I credit him for taking a stand and telling us his #1 preferred method.So the flaw - as others have pointed out....there is no discussion of the after tax implications of his system. The fact that one portfolio churns nearly 300% annually as compared to the S&P's lower annualized return but mere 5% churn. It would have been easy, given the author's background, to provide 1-2 tax brackets of examples as to the after tax returns and short versus long term gain issues implicit in his system. He does discuss the merits of using retirement money, but certainly many of us will consider using our taxable accounts as well. I may estimate this myself (best I can) and then compare this back to the regular old S&P performance to see if his system still has legs in the end. All in all - a very good read!

This book has some good ideas, however, the websites and information are no longer active, and are probably too outdated to be very useful at this time. It can be read for ideas, but no more.

Nobody backs up his claims better than Sam Stovall. His humor is corny but it works for me. I picked up a few ideas in this book and that's all I ask for.

The book is written for investors at all levels. I consider myself a seasoned investor and trader, but yet still found this book to be enlightening. The principles in the book are very simplistic but yet they will change your view of the markets and your investing strategies. I consider it a book every investor and trader should read. It is an easy read and worth every penny I paid for it.

Mark Allen Weiss's "Data Structures and Problem Solving Using Java, 3rd Edition" is a good reading if you're already familiar with Java and a few other programming languages, and want to start learning about data structures in a structured fashion. The text is easy to read and understand, and is accompanied by a good plenty of examples. Even if Java is not your primary language, the author reviews basic Java programming in the first few chapters in a way that you can learn/remember most of the important features of Java."Data Structures and Problem Solving Using Java, 3rd Edition" is a good reading and I advise it to people who want to learn about data structures. Nevertheless, it could be a better reading. Weiss is also the author of similar book for C++, and it appears that he has simply ported the C++ examples of that book to "Data Structures and Problem Solving Using Java". Therefore, some of the examples don't follow a good coding style or are not compliant with the traditions in Java programming. The author also skips the proofs of some theorems in the interest of space, but it would be a better idea to provide them as an appendix at the end of the book.

This book came severely damaged, the spine is almost in two sections and one corner of the entire first half of the book is bent. Please retire this particular book. I’m leaving this review here the day after receiving it so you don’t think I damaged the book during my rental. Thank you.

great book to learn some data structures

His examples are trying to hard to be "tricky" and "clever," however the information give is pretty top notch. It's a good buy, but you might have to get better examples off the internets.

$600 for a used version this book, really? That's what I just read right before I clicked to write this review. This book, if used, is likely chosen to teach you about java and how to write certain programs in java. It is really no different than if you were to write programs in C or any other language. Now java is a very big language, so this book does not actually teach you more than the basics of java. I can't say much about this book, since I almost never opened this book for the semester I rented it. Likely, you will just end up searching alternative code on Google or something like that. Use this book only if you are really into Java and want to look smart. I personally would just stick to TutorialsPoint, Wikipedia, and StackOverflow.

Unfortunately, I cannot say that I much liked this book. The text is very dry, and is not at all fun to read. I was going to try to read it for fun during the summer, but stopped shortly after a few pages. The author's writing style isn't intriguing either. It honestly bugged me how it was written and structured. It's hard to believe that this was published, considering it includes words like "irregardless," which isn't a proper word (ir being a negative, this becomes a double negative, "without without regard"). Luckily, I've been programming long enough that I only needed to refer to it once or twice (and the book didn't help when I did so).

I absolutely love this book. Some of the best code examples I have seen in a Computer Science book. It flows very nicely and has very good explanations of why one way is bettter than another.

It’s a snippet into little cases that could easily be a full book, but make great little novellas to tide you over while waiting for the next Lisa Gardner release.The Guy Who Died Twice is the story of a strange man who comes in stating he is dead. Not much later he turns up actually dead. D. D. and her team take on a Clue like mystery trying to decide who this rich man was and who killed it. Could it be the butler? The lawn boy? The maid? How did they do it?I love how this felt like playing a game of clue. It really got me into the story. I felt involved in the investigation right alongside my girl D.D. I found all the characters to be mysterious and had me questioning their motives and if they had the opportunity. As usual, Gardner’s writing style is intense, elusive, and keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time. She gives you just enough information to make you think you’ve figured it out when really you are not even close.Definitely pick it up on Amazon or Barnes and Nobles. It’s inexpensive and a quick, fun… bloody read.

I hate short stories as a rule but I always enjoy these ones by Lisa Gardner. This is another quick fun read. It sounds like it should be a classic who done it of the locked room variety but a book by this author is never conventional. She added her own unique twists. I think it’s pretty easy to figure out the suspect but it’s still a very enjoyable read. As always if you are new to her books you should go back to the beginning to really understand and enjoy this series. D.D. Warren is a protagonist that is worth the journey and all of this author’s books are worth the read. I cannot wait for the next full length book to arrive on my Kindle.

Lisa Gardner is one of my favorite authors. So I was very happy to get a D.D. Warren novella while waiting for her next book, Never Tell to come out.I love D.D. Warren. She is such an amazing character and it was wonderful to get to see her in this short story.I loved getting to see her funny banter with her husband. And I loved getting to see her with her squad.You don't need any previous D.D. experience to be able to follow this story (it is a self-contained mystery). Although it is obvious that this is meant for fans of the series.The Guy Who Died Twice features a murder mystery. D.D. Warren is at home with her husband recapping her day. A wealthy man is murdered in his home and there are seven suspects. D.D. goes through the suspects one by one. I loved this!I enjoyed this story very much, although I did figure out who the guilty party was. However much more detail was given, which made it interesting.I cannot wait for Never Tell!!!

The intriguing title is maybe the most interesting thing about this short story. The guy THINKS he is dead (yeah, he has a mental disorder) and then later that day, he is murdered. Clever. But the case is pretty ho-hum from there. Suspects -- which include all the household help and the doctor and the wife -- are questioned, but the real "detecting" takes place "off screen" . We aren't given any real clues before the big denouement, when the detective's crew delivers the various bits of the extensive background checks they have done on each of the suspects and she has her a-ha moment. There is an attempt at wry humor throughout (the murder victim was very very rich -- we get it), but it mostly felt flat and forced to me.

Lisa Gardner has long been one of my favorite authors so I'm not sure what happened here. There were a couple of typos for which I have ZERO tolerance and shoould have been rectified in the editing. The plot itself was rather shallow and was not of the standard for this author

Detective D.D. Warren has a strange case where a man comes in claiming he was dead and wanting them to solve his murder. A few hours later he is found murdered in his bed. Suspects are his wife, doctor, driver, chef, gardener, man servant, and maid. He had a long history of depression and a family history of depression and suicide. Great storylines and characters. Recommend this book to mystery readers.

As one of my favorite authors, I look forward to each new offering from Lisa Gardner. I have especially enjoyed the Dodge/Warren books and then the many D D Warren books which have followed. Never disappointing and always imaginative and creatively different, this book was excellent. I will always give high marks to this author. Thanks for another good book.

She's suppose to go with a group to Israel for an archeological dig but she was afraid to fly with them to Athens with the group, so she went into a non-terrorist involved city alone as her stop over before proceeding to Israel. She then becomes the suspected terrorist.... at least to security. Too many things didn't add up about her traveling conditions, and it was assumed she was a mule (carrier of something suspicious) for the tour guide not with her.From there things just don't stop. She witnesses someone killed at the Tel Aviv airport, which ends up to be the cousin of the archaeologist/professor in charge of the dig (Hannah). Also, a suspicious recently added archeologist stays close to her throughout the team's stay in Israel, and her house back home in Illinois is ransacked, but she stays in Israel.And as is normal for Lynn Austin books, there are 2 other stories going on simultaneously. One is Hannah's story from childhood to present, the other is of Leah, a young woman from first-century Israel.This book has some of the best described historical and biblical events I've ever read in fiction.I have three specific people I want to recommend it to, so I'm off to do that now!

Absolutely loved it. I never fail to enjoy a Lynn Austin book because the background is always well researched and they usually address issues. In 'Wings of Refuge' the Israeli background, the dig, the fulfillment of prophecies about the Messiah were all well researched and insightful and the issues of forgive or destroy yourself both in the Arab Israeli conflict and in infidelity were very sensitively handled. This is a book that I will definitely and read again even if only for her explanation of the Passover Supper. I highly recommend it.WARNING PLEASE NOTE: In with Lynn (double N) Austin books is an author by the name of Lyn (single N)Austin. I sent for a sample chapter of her book and although the story was grabbing me I didn't like the sexual innuendos and rather colourful words so decided to read some of the reviews before I bought it. I am very grateful to the reviewer who pointed out the difference in Christian names and the difference in content from Lynn Austins books. Go and read her review before you buy.

I loved the way Lynn Austin pulled 3 different people's stories from 3 different historical times, and connected them all in a beautiful mosaic that stands the test of time. This book is an eye opener for those who want to know more about the Jewish culture and how Jesus fulfilled all aspects of the promised Messiah. I was drawn into the characters, the mysteries involved , and the power of overcoming bitterness, anger and hate through Yeshua, who gives us the strength to forgive.

This book touched me very personally with several truths that it seems that God especially wanted me to be reminded of.The first: LIFE is a GIFT from GOD! Don't waste it (with bitterness, is what was said in the book). But for me the message I need is don't waste it with anything!The second: Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. This will be peace for all people.The third: Pray for all the hurting children, mothers and fathers everywhere. Pray that they will know the peace that passes understanding!

Lynn you did it again! Wow what a wait up call and understanding of the different Jewish religions. I can not believe it, you educated me along with giving me more insight of God ' s grace! The book moves seamlessly and brilliantly from one to another. The overall theme is how love and forgiveness are essential through difficult times and events.The plot of the story is good; there are twists, turns and surprises to keep you turning the pages. At the same time, the characterization is superb. You will care about each person in this book. The ending is great. Reading Wings of Refuge is like taking part in the story. I really loved this book and plan to read everything that Lynn Austin has written!

The words "leaving home" are central to my Leaving Home Trilogy. Leaving Home is most often understood as leaving a place of residence, more commonly known as your home. But in the Leaving Home Trilogy they take on a very different meaning. Every child grows up in the emotional home of their early years, and every child's initial response to life is based on the emotional condition of that first home. An obvious example would be growing up in a home of violence leaving the impression of a violent world the child has come to expect and needs to protect itself from. As the early expectations are experienced internally over and over they become habit, and as habit they recede into the unconscious mind from where they dictate many of the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of a person's ongoing life. On the other hand, if the home is one of care and support and respect for who the child is the child grows up into a world he or she can trust and thrive in. For any person to leave home no matter their age and no matter their early conditions, it is precisely the world of the unconscious impressions and judgments that every person unavoidably takes with them into their later life. Growing up in an enclave of ethnic lower-middle-class workers in Detroit, a young boy views his family enmeshed in the drama of the old country culture, the new country values, struggling to make sense of their lives amidst co-dependency, alcoholism, in-fighting, jealousy, and love. He sees all the family members playing their assigned roles and doesn't understand the motivations behind the complex roles and emotions swirling around them as he is growing up in the chaos. It is an intriguing story of how first-and second-generation Americans cope with straddling the lines between their parents' cultures and desires and their desire to fit in and make their own way in the American Dream in the 1959s.

Worship of Hollow Gods depicts the family norms, rituals, and religious routines of a Catholic, Polish, Detroit family in the 1950's. The weekly family gathering to play poker and pinochle is the main setting yet the beautifully written images of the family personalities takes the reader below the surface to the vulnerable underbelly of their dynamics. This book became a challenge for me to examine my own family, relating to the gatherings and unspoken expecatations within relationships. I love that this book is the first of three in what Sniechowski calls the "Leaving Home Trilogy". I find it is compelling to be confronted with what that means to "leave home" when we realize the reality of our family's faults. So, this book ends and leaves me wanting the next installment of his journey!

Not many writers can get you thinking about your life months after reading their books. Jim Sniechowski is the exception. He is a towering intellect with the ability to pen a page-turner. You're going to love this book for its intensity, its rollercoaster of emotions, its humor and its humanness.

I got wrapped up quickly into the story and could deeply relate to the feelings and things Jimush was going through.It was easy to correlate many things in this book with my own childhood as well as the childhood of many of my clients. I was shocked at what happened near the end of the book. My hope is that Jim plans on writing a future book that shares how the events in this book have affected his life and hopefully have helped him to grow as a person or maybe helped put him on a specific path or purpose in his life. My only disappointment is that I don't know what happened next and so, I'll be watching to see if there is another book to continue the storyline.

I narrated this audiobook. So, yes, I'm biased. But importantly, before I decided to record it I read it and fell in love with it. Sniechowski transported me to another time and place. His fantastic array of characters jump off the page with their isms. His writing style is tough, real, bitingly funny at times, visceral to it's core and full of love--I imagine much like the man himself. But this ain't just some guy's story. This is a highly revealing, deft tale of survival, finding oneself, and the search for love. It's a book that'll move you. It moved me.

Pros:Good recipes, easy to follow, table of contents very helpful.Cons:No nutrition information which is frustrating because i have to look up the net carbs for each ingredient. For example, butternut squash and leeks are very high in net carbs but they are used in some of the soups which worried me. But after all of the other ingredients added, the net carbs per serving were acceptable. However if the carbs/ fiber/ fat/ and protein was calculated and printed with each recipe, finding the macros would have been easier.

Eating keto and exercising regularly easily lead me to eating a lot of the exact same stuff. I spend a lot of time prepping and cooking vegetables and meats mostly - so I bought a new slow cooker many months ago, but still ended up eating the same stuff over and over. A very good feature about these recipes is that they are easy to follow - but detailed nutrition info for the recipes ISN’T included, in case you’re looking for that. I wasn’t - so if you’re a veg and meat mostly kind of person you’ll be very satisfied with this cookbook also. And extra spices and other ingredients besides the big ones are almost always easily found in a supermarket.Additionally, my girlfriend - who of course has more preferences for how things should taste (Specifically, GOOD lol) was pleasantly surprised about with a few of the recipes I made so far. So, it passes the girlfriend test.Two quick notes also - as others have mentioned here, my book had no pictures inside - just b&w text, and most of the recipes are to be cooked in 4 hrs (in case overnight/all day timing is an issue for anyone).

Overall I am disappointed with this cook book. For starters, there are no pictures. But the biggest drawback now for me not recommending this cook book is that there is a couple of recipes with ingredients left out. Most annoying is the butter chicken recipe where it does not list canned tomatoes or actual butter until the preparation part and then does not mention how much. Also, some of the recipes are not even true Keto and can be deceiving to people first starting out the Keto diet. For instance, the ingredient soy sauce is used.

So I had checked reviews, but gave this a shot. Beyond the no pictures and no nutrition information, which is annoying but not the end of the world, I will agree with other reviewers who found the content odd. Not a lot of main dishes, a lot of odd side dishes, a lot of shrimp dishes (who cooks seafood in a crockpot????) and a lot of dips. Dips???? you're doing super low carb, so no starches or breads, and you have to watch your veggie carbs closely, what exactly are you dipping in all these dips. It was so weird I didn't even donate it, I threw it away.

I like the types of recipes included. The instructions are vague in many of the recipes, but I "winged" it if I didn't understand. It's fine for someone who cooks often, but for my son, who wanted some of the recipes and RARELY cooks....was not very clear.

What good is a 'keto' cookbook if you don't list the fat, carb, protein breakdown, no calories either? I will be returning this book.

This book was next to useless. Sure it had a lot of what looked like tasty recipes in it, but it didn't bother to include any of the nutrient information for the recipes. Since this book is literally for the Keto diet, that seems like a glaring omission. All in all, if you're trying to be Keto, avoid this one.

No pictures, no nutrition info (thought I can tell by the ingredients that they are all in fact low carb). Recipes are fine, typically requiring only a handful of ingredients, but I can look up plenty of those online. This might be a good book for someone who doesn't have any slow cooker recipes already and is just starting their low carb journey.

About a year ago I read my first work by Jenny Erpenbeck, her short novel "Visitation". I was highly impressed -- enough so that I resolved to read other fiction of hers in translation. I started at the beginning -- which is THE OLD CHILD & OTHER STORIES.Published in 1999, "Gesichte vom alten Kind" ("History of the Old Child" in English) was Erpenbeck's first published prose fiction. It is an arresting, rather bewildering novella about a fourteen-year-old girl who is found standing in a Dresden street with an empty bucket in one hand. She doesn't know or remember her name or anything else about herself except that she is fourteen. She is placed in the Home for Children, where she willingly obeys authority but shows very little initiative. Very slowly she awkwardly accommodates herself to the academic and social life of the eighth grade . . . until an event commemorating the anniversary of the fire-bombing of Dresden. It leaves her badly shaken and confused: "Why is there a birthday party when the people were boiled alive?" The girl (Erpenbeck never gives her a name) then begins a downhill slide into an illness that puts her in a bed in the Municipal Hospital and suddenly ages her such that she resembles a woman of thirty. The authorities find her mother and bring the old lady to the hospital. "Oh, are you my mother? says the woman who used to be the girl, and very slowly she opens her eyes. I don't remember you at all.""History of the Old Child" certainly seems to be an allegory, but my attempts to make sense of it are pretty feeble. Does it have something to do with life in East Germany (the part of divided Germany in which Dresden was located and the nation of Erpenbeck's birth)? Does it somehow have something to do with Oscar Matzerath, the deranged boy drummer of Günter Grass's "The Tin Drum", who also did not want to grow up? The novella is rich in potential allusions, but many of them confound me completely. (For example, when the girl tries repeating a quip of one of her classmates and is utterly ignored, "she glances down at herself and, sure enough, there is the sentence she has stolen from her classmate poking out of her side.") Erpenbeck's prose is stark and laconic and noteworthy. But in the end "History of the Old Child" does not engage me. No doubt that is due in part to the fact that for me it was so elusive -- but then I also am mystified by much of Kafka, yet rarely does he fail to engage me.The "other stories" in this volume are from Erpenbeck's second publication, a collection of short stories that appeared in 2001. They range from four to thirteen pages in length. Two of them -- "Sand" and "Hale and Hallowed" -- are superb; they also are more conventional, less allegorical, than the other pieces in this volume. Those two stories alone would have alerted me that Jenny Erpenbeck is a writer to keep an eye out for. All six pieces, by the way, present legacies of one sort or another (I think).

Jenny Erpenbeck's first book to be published in English consists of the title novella plus five short stories. Only one of these is at all conventional, but that is a beauty. Entitled "Hale and Hallowed," after a New Year's custom practised by German children, it is about an old woman visiting a contemporary whom she last saw in a maternity ward fifty years ago, when they were both giving birth to sons. The friend has suffered a stroke, and at first remembers nothing. But as her visitor persists, a miracle begins: "Gertrud can now remember the young face of the old woman who has appeared before her, and she realizes that an entire piece of her lifetime which she herself had so thoroughly forgotten that she was not even able to regret forgetting it has been preserved inside this woman like a cake in a cool, dark pantry." Gradually, everything begins to come back in full detail, Gertrud's gain mirroring her visitor's loss.Most of these stories appear to be about time in one way or another. A young girl sees her actress grandmother slip into dementia, accompanied by the echoes of her old poetic voices. A female prisoner-of-war returns from Siberia, filled with an energy and determination that contrasts with her husband's degeneration. In the final story, the narrator sees "the phases of my life sitting in a circle around Death," living through childhood, an affair, exile, maturity, and old age in five brief almost abstract sections. This seems to refer back to several other stories in the book, including the strangest of all, a collage of psychosexual images entitled "The Sun-Flecked Shadows of my Skull," perhaps the surreal deconstruction of an affair, perhaps code for something else entirely.The sense of some other meaning behind the apparent surface is strongest in the title novella, "The Story of the Old Child." An unnamed 14-year-old girl is found in the street, carrying an empty bucket. Unable to answer for herself, she is placed in an orphanage, where she willingly accepts her place at the very bottom of the childhood hierarchy, too dull to succeed in class, too heavy to be any good at games, the butt of cruel jokes, but pathetically eager and loyal. She looks older than her years to begin with, and time that seems to have stopped for her mind accelerates for her body, so that by the novella's surprising climax she is virtually a mature woman. The story has a horrible fascination on its surface level, familiar to anyone who has known bullying at school, and written with a remarkable empathy. But I suspect it may also be a parable for something else, perhaps the East German people under Communism; I don't know enough at first hand to be sure. This would certainly be in keeping with Erpenbeck's nightmare novella THE BOOK OF WORDS (2004). And certainly her magnificent recent novel VISITATION, much more lucid and less dark than these earlier explorations, where the passage of time and political power is indeed the main subject.
