THE BULLY AT WORK looks at the latest issue in the work place--allowing a manager (or in some cases a co-worker)to demean you as a method of control and keeping you from seeing your value as an employee of a company. This practice occurs within many companies. Some don't offically authorize it but sanction it by ignoring it or ignoring the problem(bringing it up to HR only indicates to those within that department that they are not doing their job in many cases making them defensive). Many managers get away with it in large corporations because the people they work for never are on the receiving end of these mind games (and make no mistake they are mind games). Large corporations whether they be a large company like Novartis, Kaiser, IBM and smaller organizations often lose good people by allowing what amounts to harrassment to occur. The authors outline the steps you need to take to derail the psychological manipulation, restore your self confidence and sense of self worth. In some cases, that means leaving a company. Often these companies ignore the signs (high turnover within an office or district, complaints mentioned in exit interviews)because of concern over lawsuits. This enables the disfunctional person behind these humilitations to continue to their assault on employees and make no mistake it is an assault comprising a form of psychological rape. The authors identify the various personalty types, types of abuse and what makes someone a Target. They also make suggestions to disable employees from becoming Targets and discouraging the manager/supervisor from continuing their onslaught. Just because a manager discontinues harrassing one employee doesn't mean they won't continue doing this because according to the authors it springs from a deep seated insecurity and bullying as children by their parents or other children. Sadly, as the authors point out the Targets of bullying allow the bully to act out on their aggression and usually the bully has no insight into their actions or unethical behavior. You're not imagining it. This book will help you act and deal with these psychologically disturbed individuals wrongly put into positons of power.

Having been through previously unimaginable pain and loss both personally and in my career from an instance of this, never believe it cannot happen to you. No matter how strong you are as a person, how good you are at your job, how wise at office politics, etc, there is a nemesis out there for you. I hope none of you reading this find yours, and to those who have, I will share a quiet moment with you. There is not much one can say to another who has been there - you just know. In a way, being a military child, it's similar to a battlefield. The PTSD is real. The damage to you psychologically and emotionally, is real. But these people, be they evil, mentally ill, or damaged in some way go on with their lives and rarely with any consequences. That's reality. Namie does a good job calling out the issue, and most importantly calling it by its proper name. Bullying is not calling someone a name. Bullying is a systematic destruction of who you are as a person. And I have come to believe the only way to truly leave with your life intact, is to leave that environment and that individual permanently. Changing to a diferent department does not help, nor a different division. Mine came after me, behind closed doors, across several states. Do yourself a favor and get out as soon as you can make the move. And keep this book to help you realize you are not imagining things. Trust your gut. Your gut knows when it's really bullying and not just a bad day, a clash of personalities, or just a bad boss.

I wished that as a teenager, I had grasped this book to fully comprehend what I had to endure. The book covers in detail what workplace bullying or mobbing is, how it starts, what it does to you, types tactics used by the abuser, etc. I remember a full array of instances at workplaces dealing with these types of people. Some made verbal threats, others sabotaged personal relationships, invaded my privacy, discredited my work, spread malicious lies, intervened in job offers, divulged my personal economic standpoint to many, made false accusations, and even sexually harassed me. Of all employers, one struck a cord when I was in high school working at a fast food chain. She called me vulgar names in front of people, always humiliated me in front of the world. When People reported her for what she was doing to me and she punished me for it. It took time and courage to stand my ground. Shed go to lengths in victimizing herself that my parents thought I was the bad apple. It took a toll on me mentally. I decided after six months while having no support, to take control over the matter and to confront her regarding her actions. she said shed ensure no company would ever hire me, that no school would ever accept me, and ensure that people would make my life miserable. And that indeed she did. Companies came forward advising she did recommend that i not be considered for employment and people came forward advising she had told them to participate in rumors and ways to cause misery but they wanted no part in it. I was so young but I understood that she had no power over me. She used all her authority, money, power, and influence to do bad things to me. But I never gave up. Years later, I found out she had lost her business and that she was asking people around for me because she regretted all the terrible things shed put me through. Karma. In another instance, I had a female coworker at an office that hated me so much for no reason, such that she verbally told me she wished I was dead and that I should kill myself because she was never going to stop in her attempts to destroy my life. She spread many lies, invaded my privacy, turned coworkers into my enemies through lies, and even dressed like me, wore her hair like me and intervened in my personal relationships. There are so many more instances to name a few in witnessing and being targeted for this type of abuse. Sadly there are no workplace laws to protect us from these types of abusive events and sadly these conflicts can go on for years and years. People often continue with these types of abusive campaigns outside of the workplace. I learned on my own that when someone says that I'll never be happy and I'll never succeed it means i can, that I should always fight for the truth and for my happiness, I learned to stand my ground and walk with my head high when confronting adversity within my workplaces, that if I get mad and give in to my aggressor...I am giving them power over me. This is a good book to obtain on workplace mobbing whether you're self employed, a CEO, manager, supervisor, or someone looking to gain some perspective on how to handle these types of covert emotionally manipulative and abusive people within the work environment...then I'd say this book has some amazing insight.

About the Author

GERTRUDE CRAMPTON (1909-1996) wrote the beloved classic Little Golden Books Tootle (published in 1945) and Scuffy the Tugboat (published in 1946), both of which have never been out of print. Crampton was born in New York in 1909, and studied at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She died in 1996.TIBOR GERGELY (1900-1978) brought to life two of the most popular Little Golden Book characters, beloved by generations: Scuffy the Tugboat and Tootle. Born in Budapest, Hungary, he received his formal art schooling in Vienna at age 20. Gergely designed stage sets and marionettes and worked as an illustrator and cartoonist for central European newspapers. In 1939, Gergely immigrated to the United States, settling in New York. His long association with Golden Books began in 1942—the year of its launch—and continued as long as he lived. In 1955, Gergely received a Caldecott Honor for Wheel on the Chimney, written by Margaret Wise Brown, author of Goodnight Moon. I recently bought the Kindle version. But our family still has the original hard cover version purchased 69 years ago which I gave to my grandson. Obviously I love the book. So does my grandson. (One reviewer commented that the original version had a map at the end which illustrated Scuffy's entire journey..I can confirm that the original version had this illustration and the current version does not.)Some reviewers claim that the book sends the wrong message: "Be happy with your safe little bathtub and don't go off on dangerous adventures."That's not the message I got from this book. I believe the book encourages young people to seek out adventures but to recognize their limitations. (When Scuffy reached the ocean he knew he was over his head.) That is the mantra that has guided me throughout my life. It has worked for me. I am 76 years old and have survived many adventures.

Book arrived within 2 days in excellent condition.Moral of the story is all about gratitude. Be grateful for what you have, when you have it. Recognize those who are kind and good to you while you can. Or be an arrogant little tugboat & come to be filled with regret.(It's ok- there's a happy ending for the tugboat.)Or interpret it any twisted, depressing way you want based on your generation, how many times you were told you are special, or how many times you listened to TLC's Chasing Waterfalls. I don't care.If your toddler like boats, they'll like the book.

I love this book and so does my daughter. I really enjoy reading this to her and doing different voices and sound effects, we both enjoy the detailed illustrations. I wish that more books published today had the care and value in Little Golden Books. The story is rich but easy for a child to understand, the illustrations are whimsical but masterful. Each page is a work of art. We love Little Golden Books and this was one we knew we had to our library.Scuffy is a little bit controversial because I think a lot of people see it as telling kids not to dream big and to play it safe. I really don't think that is the message at all. Scuffy goes out into the world on his own, and does brave and scary things. He's a tiny toy tugboat that eventually makes it from a bathtub to an ocean. On the way he goes through small streams and huge rivers (which can be helpful in teaching kids about bodies of water and things like that) and has many adventures. Eventually he makes it back to his bathtub where he realizes that he's happy. He DID dream big and he DID make it to the ocean, but when he got there he realized that #1 it was scary and he didn't like it as much as he thought he would and #2 he missed the man with the polka dot tie and the little boy who loved him! How many times have you planned something and it didn't turn out how you wanted it to? Or did something you wanted to do and wished you hadn't?As an adult, I identify with Scuffy in so many ways. I currently travel with my daughter and husband thousands of miles away from my home and everyone I love because my husband is in the military. I miss my family and friends so much, and sometimes I'm scared to be away from them. I miss a lot of big things, like births in the family, weddings, etc. But I know I was meant for bigger things, (taking care of my family, being with my husband) but one day I will go back to them (my bathtub) when my husband's time with the military is over. These are the types of lessons we should be teaching our children so that when they go out into the world they will remember that they still will have a home with their loving parents and family. Even though they are meant for bigger things, there's a cozy bathtub waiting for them if they need it. Knowing they always have a fortress of love and understand behind them, kids will be empowered to face the scary things in the world.

I was very excited to get this book to read to my son as I loved it when I was a child! All was going well until I realized the words and pictures were not going together. It's missing a page or two of pictures so while reading it you get confused due to the pictures being completely off from the words.

This was one of my favorite books growing up, and now I enjoy reading it to my kids. It's the story of a toy tugboat who wants adventure and believes he "was meant for bigger things" but eventually realizes that home is exactly the right place for him. The illustrations are wonderful and show kids many different environments - all the way from a rural brook with cows in it to a bustling seaport at the edge of the ocean, and everything in between. Highly recommended if you enjoy sharing timeless stories and beautiful illustrations with your little ones.

I loved Scuffy the Tugboat as a kid, and like Scuffy I wanted to do big things. I did do big things and I want my kids to do big things too. That's why I bought this book to read to them, though it was hard to find. There's something comforting to a child's mind to know that Scuffy is right: that there are bigger things out there than his bathtub. He goes out and sees the big world and the worst that happens to him is that he is scared. But his safe bathtub is still there to come home to. And even though we adults know that Scuffy will always be a toy and will never do big things, kids know that one day they will grow up and may be ready to see the big world and do big things. But until they grow up, their safe little bathtub will always be there to come home to. That's not how we adults logically see the book, but it is a story for children, and they don't draw conclusions based on a life of experience as we do.

I am 71 years old and remember this golden book well, however I do also remember an additional page that has his whole journey mapped with each step along the river. I was disappointed that this version omitted this page.

The story and illustrations are delightful. Fun, fun book to read and talk about the pictures. Almost 3 year old grandson just loves it.

Seattle Justice: The Rise and Fall of the Police Payoff System in Seattle, by Christopher T. Bayley

Review

"Bayley's short first-person history is a compelling read and a vivid reminder that Seattle wasn't always the sparkling technological machine that it is now. In fact, not so long ago, it was something quite different."—The Seattle Times"[This book] provides context to the forces that helped shape some of the city's key neighborhoods—and makes a compelling argument for why we need watchdogs for those in power."—The Stranger"Seattle Justice: The Rise and Fall of the Police Payoff System in Seattle by former King County prosecutor Christopher T. Bayley, published by Sasquatch Books this fall, is an eye-opening new memoir that offers perspective on how hard it is to reform local law enforcement, but reassures that big changes can be made."—Seattle Magazine"“Seattle Justice” is a valuable guide to the city’s racial conflicts from the late 1960’s to the present. We should not forget this history:  The central message of Bayley’s fine book:  The good old days were pretty damned rotten."—Seattle P.I."Christopher T. Bayley has put forward a thoughtful and detailed accounting of, as he has written, 'How a city can will itself to do better.' You will find that Bayley was a major figure in bringing much-needed reform to Seattle."—Bill Gates, Sr.  "This is an important story of young citizen activists, dismayed over a ‘tolerance policy’ on crime in King County, Washington. Bayley, a leader of the group, ran for county prosecutor against an entrenched incumbent in what appeared to be a hopeless race--and won. As prosecutor, he created a professional team that ended tolerance policies and his legacy is a highly professional county prosecutor’s office that is the pride of citizens forty years later." —Daniel J. Evans, former Washington State governor and US senator  "Seattle suffers from the It-Can't-Happen-Here syndrome, and this book should shake that complacency. Our politicians, government, and the press became deeply corrupted by an illegal payoff system, and Bayley's book spells it out with an investigative reporter's relentless precision and a lawyer's attention to solid evidence. Toppling that system took a lot of courage, plenty of luck, and the rise of reform politics in the state. What a saga! What a narrow escape! What a warning for today!" —David Brewster, writer, editor, and publisher; founder of Seattle Weekly and Crosscut.com  "Christopher T. Bayley’s memoir reminds us of an old and not very respectable Seattle in which he played a pivotal role in transforming it into a major city respected for the honesty of its politics and law enforcement." —Slade Gorton, former US Senator  "This is the story of how young Seattleites reformed a corrupt police force and prosecutor’s office through intelligence, energy, and courage. Our burgeoning millennials need to step up and pursue needed reforms for American communities to continue progress today." —William D. Ruckelshaus, former administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency   "As candidate and prosecutor, Bayley led the cleanup of Seattle corruption. That he and his team did it largely through the political system shows the reforming power of representative democracy. There is a lesson here for right now in America. Sovereignty resides with the people, after all." —Bruce Chapman, Seattle City Council member (1971[-]75), founder of Discovery Institute  "Seattle Justice tells firsthand the important story of how a few dedicated reformers changed a corrupt civic culture. The battle was as much against complacency as the wrongdoing itself. Every generation needs its Bayleys to challenge the indifference and inertia of its time." —Ted Van Dyk, author of Heroes, Hacks and Fools and longtime Democratic national policy advisor  "I am not a fan of detective stories or police procedurals, and have never lived in Seattle (worse, I'm a 49ers fan). But I was drawn into Seattle Justice. Bayley writes crisply and clearly, sorting out the characters and transforming this tangled web into a fascinating tale of municipal corruption and cleanup." —John Rockwell, former New York Times arts critic    "This is a well documented and lively story that is part youth movement, part political movement, and all about a properly aroused band of citizens focused on changing their city for the better. And, ultimately, doing it." —Charley Royer, former Seattle mayor  "Seattle Justice provides a colorful, fascinating portrait of the ugly underbelly of the city and reveals how a well-intentioned tolerance policy undermines the morality of law enforcement institutions and leads to pervasive crime." —Sam Reed, Washington secretary of state, 2001 to 2013 "In an age of squeaky-clean, process-heavy local government, it’s hard to believe that in the 1960s Seattle was rocked by a shocking corruption and payoff scandal that implicated both the local police and elected officials. Bayley, a young lawyer in that era, ran for prosecuting attorney, won, and secured indictments against several public officials. This is his story."—The Seattle Times

This is a fascinating book, a must read if you live in King County, WA, and simply interesting and instructive if you don't. It is the story of a young prosecutor who took on big odds and an amazingly corrupt system. Names are named. This is history, but in Seattle where we like to pretend that graft and corruption only happen elsewhere, it's good to know that our history argues strongly against that. The book is also a fun read, I could see it being made into a movie someday actually. Hmmm... who to play Bayley?

I got this book and read it in four days while taking the bus back-and-forth to work - it was that good. The author takes us onto his journey of finally breaking the Tolerance Policy, an anachronism left over from Seattle's pioneer days. Low level vices were tolerated, on the theory that it kept out the dangerous east coast mob. This tolerance then resulted in payoffs, which polluted both the police and politicians. I vaguely remember the news of the trials when I was a kid, so I was eager to finally get into this subject. The author tells a crisp and engaging story of how the Tolerance Policy was born, evolved over nearly a century, and finally died. I was impressed with his research and prose. In an subject with more tails then facts, the author does a great job of original research, connecting chronological points into a cohesive story line, and constructing a complete story of how something evolved grossly over time. Most of all, the book is well written, encouraging you to turn the pages, worthy of your time to read.I take off one star because while the book concludes, it doesn't wrap up. There's no follow-up on former-prosecutor Carroll (the main antagonist) after the indictment, even though he lived to 96 years old. (Had to go to HistoryLink to answer that question.) It seems like the author spent time talking to some of the old-time cops who resisted the Tolerance Policy, but their viewpoints are not well developed. I would have also liked to read the viewpoints of those who supported the Tolerance Policy. Even though it's easy to condemn in retrospect, what was the thinking at the time that lead them to conclude tolerance actually served the City of Seattle better? Lastly, I find the final chapter, of relating past events to City of Seattle police challenges in 2014 (of racial tensions and the Justice Department oversight) unsatisfying and superfluous. What this book needs is a good epilogue of what eventually happened to all of the players. I guess like any good book, it leaves you wanting just a little bit more.

Reading Chris's memoir was like a walk down memory lane. I was a 17-year old Lincoln High School junior when Chris and Ed Heavey debated in Lincoln's auditorium. I was impressed with both Chris and Ed. Chris was "old" to me at the time, but he was only 31 years old. I caught the bug and decided I would go to law school. Eight years later, I became a member of the Washington bar and started my career working for Ed Heavey in his private law practice. Many of the names Chris recalls I have met or know from court. As a trial and municipal attorney, I agree with Chris that public service requires a wariness of becoming too complacent. Reform never stops. Chris reminds us of this fact.

Chris Did an excellent job of laying out a convoluted wide spread problem with corruption in the Seattle Police Department. Most of the main players in the graft were identified and labeled as co-conspirators in the problem. The first half of the book covered a period of time that I was not familiar with but identified the names of those who would play pivotal roles in my rookie years. I first witnessed the payoffs in China town working as a patrolman on the relief squad. I refused to accept free meals at restaurants and when walking a beat with an "old timer" on Pike street and First Avenue I made excuses to not take a drink in the back rooms of cocktail Lounges and Restaurants. It did not take long for the Officers and supervisors long to figure out that I was not going to participate in the corruption. Because the did not trust the new "straight arrow" rookie officer I was transferred to the South Precinct in George Town. That was where the non-corrupted were sent as the corruption had not reached there. I rember well the names of the the participants in the corruption and Chris accurately identified the main people at the top. But missed a few of the participants at the lower end of the problem. All in all the book was well written and the facts were as clear as one could get in a corruption scandal.Good Job Chris, and a fun read for someone who was there.

I was a young pup at the end of the Charles O. Carroll police scandals and when Bayley (and the federal prosecutor) led the charge to clean up Seattle's policing, so I sort of remembered following the story in the newspapers. The book is a fascinating look at a part of Seattle's history that a lot of people would rather forget. A worthwhile read for anyone interested in western Washington history.

While this provides a good historical perspective on the vice activities in Seattle which lead to the era of Tolerance, it leaves me with a lot of questions regarding some of the main characters and situations described in the book. What happened to Charles O. Carroll after his defeat and trial? What happened to the Washington Liquor Control Board members who were indicted, was there a trial, did graft among that entity get cleaned up? Did Charles Berger continue running his bingo parlors? Among other questions. While the book is intended to detail police activity it would have been nice to have these questions answered.

Detailed, informative and somewhat lacking in conclusion. Bayley could have said more about his role but he did paint a detailed picture of the political process. This is not bedside reading but his treatment does open a window into an active time in Seattle politics. The book is worth a read by those interested in Seattles political history.

I was in Seattle when this was happening. Enjoyed the story.
