I was surprised by how much I loved this book. I wasn't a big fan of Haley in the first book. She seemed so superficial. I'm glad I got to know her character better in this book. She was a lot deeper than I thought. I also loved Fletch. I got why he was the way he was, but it was a little annoying at times. That didn't bug me much. I loved how this book touched on both allergies and ADHD. This was a great addition to the series.

Daniel Boorstin has said, "A best-seller was a book which somehow sold well simply because it was selling well" and in my opinion, that's the case here: these books are only selling well because they sell well and are at the top of lists for must-buy, must-read for teens, not because the book is necessarily a good read or a book teens are eager to read (spoiler-sort-of: none of the teens I talk to want to read a book like this one for the same reasons I don't like to read one like this one). Those who know my reviews know that I look for clean books--that is, ones that don't have swearing, gratuitous violence, or sex, or ones that aren't immoral or unchaste. I don't want that kind of content stuck in my brain if I can help it, especially if the content is gratuitous, which in my opinion, it was in this book. I thought I'd be all right with this book because (1) it was YA and those are supposed to be clean, with content no higher than you'd find in a PG-rated movie, right? (2) the cover looked interesting and wasn't like the bodice-rippers of the adult romance section--nothing on the cover indicated that there would be any sex in this book. I could not have been more wrong in my assumptions:This book (as far as I read before I stopped reading because it hit all my no-nos for a book) had multiple and frequent usages of the F-word and the Lord's or God's name in vain (several variations) by both characters. It also had quite a bit of implied sex by the 5th chapter or so (which is how far I read). After the first instance of implied sex, I flipped ahead to random spots in the novel see if this kind of content was going to be consistent, and yup, there was more implied sex and even some explicit heavy petting. In addition, I didn't have to search thoroughly on any of those random pages to see more F-bombs, profanity, or blasphemy; swearing is quite prolific in this novel. So if you're a parent or a teen looking for a chaste YA romance with no swearing or blasphemy, this isn't the novel for you.Granted, the premise was interesting (as far as I read) and decently approached the dual POV. When I started the novel (before I found the first instance profanity and sexual innuendo), I had hoped to use this book as a model for a dual-perspective novel that had both an athlete, a nerd, and romantic elements (which I have planned to put in my YA novel), but I just couldn't tolerate the content once the characters started cursing and the content slanted in a sexual direction. Also, I agree with other reviewers that the two MCs aren't as convincing as they could have been and came up lacking in syntax and character development.Breaking the Ice (Juniper Falls)

I've been hearing fantastic things about Breaking the Ice for months now. Everyone seemed to love it, but for some reason I kept putting it off. For what reason, you may ask? I can't even begin to tell you, sometimes I'm stubborn for no real reason. Thankfully, I finally decided to give it a chance when I was in desperate need of a feel-good/swoony romance, and you know what happened? I LOVED IT of course! (Note to self: stop being so darn stubborn)It's going to be hard to review Breaking the Ice without full-out fangirling so bear with me here.Fletcher and Haley mix as well as oil-and-water at first. Fletcher's used to being a man of very little words while Haley just wants to talk, talk, talk. I adored seeing them interact with each other. The first scene, in particular, was one of my favorites! As soon as Haley's tapping began and Fletcher's annoyance grew and grew, I knew it was only a matter of time before they ended up together. The chemistry between them is spicy - so spicy in fact that I felt like the pages were going to melt at certain points. Honestly, Julie Cross writes some of the hottest non-kissing scenes I've ever read! The tension between these two was just off the charts, trust me. I was blushing! What I loved the most about Haley and Fletcher, however, was how real they were. They both had their fair share of drama and problems, and I enjoyed seeing them explore them as the book progressed. For instance, Haley's used to being the social butterfly of her town, and that was incredibly evident in the way she carried herself. She's friendly and sweet. She's great with children and organizing events. Truly the ultimate "Princess." However, below the surface, Haley struggles more than she'd like to admit. She's terrified about failing civics, and she also hates how the one person she wants to know the most (Fletcher) is the one person who wants nothing do with her. I appreciated Haley's determination. Once this girl had a plan in mind, she set it motion before you knew it! Sometimes her meddling got a little out of control, but it was always done with good intentions. Also, I LOVED that we got a boy best friend that wasn't a love interest here. Jamie was my third favorite character of the book (behind Fletcher and Haley of course!), and he added so many laughs to the book. His friendship with Halley was very much brother-and-sister like, especially when it came to squabbling.Fletcher, on the other hand, is a man-of-mystery. Even though his POV alternates with Haley, it was so hard to get a feeling for him at first. I wanted to know just as badly as Haley what exactly he was hiding. Why did he have wads of money as well as pockets full of panties? Was he truly a stripper? When the big secret was finally revealed I couldn't have been more surprised. It added a whole new layer to Fletcher's character - one that I adored. I also liked that while Fletcher wasn't one to hold back the sass and one-liners he still had so much heart to him. I loved seeing him interact with his family. My only compliant? There were some secondary story lines I would've liked to know more about: however, at the end of the day it wasn't the biggest of problems. I got what I came for - a well-developed romance - and to tell the truth sometimes that all I need to be content. In all, Breaking the Ice is a slam-dunk YA Romance in my book. Combining scorching hot chemistry with lovable characters, Breaking the Ice will have you smiling and swooning the whole way through! I can't wait to see what adventures occur next in Juniper Falls! Also, I want more Jamie! Please and thank you!

Most wonderful books change you in some way,and this beautifully written book is no exception. I couldn't stop reading all the wonderful stories. They taught me how to be a better patient, a better human being, and a better caretaker of my soul and body. Richly written with heartwrenching stories about the ups and downs of nursing, this book made want to run out and buy it for all my friends. Not because it was about nursing, but rather more than that---it was a book about living and dying--and the men and women nurses who act as midwives to these experiences. This book is both informative and literary, and one I would heartily recommend to all my friends.

The St. Patrick's Day Shillelagh, by Janet Nolan

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-Fergus and his family immigrate to the U.S. during the potato famine. On his last night home, the boy cuts a branch from his favorite blackthorn tree in order to "take a piece of Ireland with him on his journey across the ocean." During the voyage, he whittles this branch into a shillelagh, and on each St. Patrick's Day, he recounts his family's journey from their homeland to America. After many years, he passes the shillelagh and its story on to his son Declan, who in turn passes it on to his son, Emmet. The heirloom makes its way to succeeding generations until Ryan puts it in a closet when he moves to a new house. Years later, his daughter discovers it and, at her father's urging, takes it to her Grandpa Garrett in order to learn its history. He passes the object on to her, saying, "A good story never has to end as long as someone remembers to keep telling it." Though not as spare and poetic as Patricia Polacco's The Keeping Quilt (S & S, 1988), this account provides just enough historical context for each generation to be interesting. Stahl's realistic, acrylic illustrations adeptly convey the passage of time for this engaging family. A nice introduction to Irish immigration and the concepts of family traditions and heritage.Piper L. Nyman, Fairfield/Suisun Community Library, Fairfield, CACopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist

Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. In the midst of the Irish potato famine, Fergus' parents make a difficult decision: the family will leave Ireland and sail to America. On the long journey, Fergus carves a branch he cut from a blackthorn tree into a handsome shillelagh. Fergus embraces America, but every year he tells the story of the shillelagh on St. Patrick's Day. When the time comes, he passes the shillelagh and the honor of telling its story to his son saying, "Take this branch as a memory of Ireland." People in each new generation continue to tell the story as a way of celebrating their Irish heritage and remembering the past, even as they continue to help America move forward. Fergus and his descendants symbolize the important role that immigrants play in shaping American history. Stahl's richly textured acrylic paintings complement the text effectively. This heartwarming story, which also celebrates the art of storytelling, can be enjoyed on St. Patrick's Day and all year round. Lauren PetersonCopyright © American Library Association. This is a special book. It is not just a book for St. Patrick's Day, though it does figure into the story. This book encompasses family history, heritage and tradition. The illustrations are lush and detailed. This could even be used in teaching about the gathering of oral history and the importance of collecting the stories while someone is still remembering to tell them. This especially touches me because my husband has Irish heritage and he lived in Ireland for a time. This story speaks to me of the importance of not losing the connections to our past. Excellent book.

Cheers for this book. Iam 4th generation irish on both sides of my family and my father had a blackthorn walking stick that he used all the time. It came to me upon his death and then to my youngest son. It means a lot to my whole family..for the irish history and the life of my dad. This book personifies all that is dear in each irish family and I highly recommend it for the young ones In your family to remember and carry on the memories.

Reminds my of my first walking stick from Ireland. Great little book for story time.

My grandkids and I really enjoyed reading this book. I think that knowledge of other cultures is a good thing, and traditions are important to introduce even to kids. What we learn as kids is certainly valuable as we grow up. I'd recommend this!

Loved it! As the Granddaughter of an Irish immigrant, it struck very close to home for me.Our history is shared orally from one generation to the next. This lovely book gave a genuine view into what it is to be Irish in America. My students loved it as well.

Great story! My 5 year old loves it!

As you might assume from my name, Janet (one "t" only, when you are identifying the author) is a friend, a relative and a daughter-in-law . . . I don't think my critique, while accurate, is marketable. but, thanks for asking.

I read to 4th grade students and they loved the story, Before reading I shared some history of the shillelagh and this added much to the story.

I ,wrongfully, used to equate James Beard with his well known cookbook "Beard on Bread". The reality is that he has so much to offer beyond that 'pillar of knowledge' in many cookbook libraries.I have found several interesting pasta dishes in this compact book which are now becoming 'standards' in our house. Others I am exploring.Best of all, I think, are the narritive descriptions of the food or the process to make a dish before the recipe. I just love to read about his love for food and his relaxed and practical approach to all in the kitchen.

This is a great book that not only has intersting recipes, but gives the history of different noodles and the cultures from which they come. Book was in great shape. Would order from seller again.

One of my old favorites, practical recipes. I've used this book for years, the second book I ever.bought for making pasta, the first was Marcella Hasan Italian cooking.. it's convenient t to have this book on my kindle

bought this to go with my new pasta machine. well written. good range of recipes well explained.

Very practical to nonprofessional chef. The pasta making was easy to follow. Beard is very encouraging and trusting that anyone can cook like did.

A classic and no one into homemade pasta should not have Beard's book.

Brilliant!

It's James Beard, the greatest foodie of all time. The pasta info is sound, like all Beard info is. He goes to the source. Super happy to pick this up used in such good condition!!

I experienced several starts and stops with this book--not because it's poorly written or dull, but because it's very sad. The relationship between how sad I find a book and how many times I have to put it down to check on my sleeping children is a directly proportional one. I checked on my children a lot while reading this book, watching their little backs rise and fall and counting their laborious REM-sleep breaths to make sure all was well with them. I remember, as a kid, rolling my eyes at my own mother when she would wince, gasp and recoil at the sight of something tragic happening to a child on TV. Then I had kids of my own, and I've since apologized for my cavalier attitude. I winced and gasped and recoiled a lot while reading this book--then checked on my sleeping kids. There Is No Me Without You accomplishes a lot. It primarily tells the story of Haregewoin Teferra, a Christian Ethiopian woman who, in order to cope with the loss of her husband and eldest daughter, started a make-shift, grass-roots orphanage for stigmatized AIDS orphans in her hometown, Addis Ababa. Intertwined with Haregwoin's amazing story is a history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, its origins and impact. In telling the story, Melissa Fay Greene does so many things right. She resists deifying her subject, presenting Haregewoin's flaws alongside her virtues, which results in a nuanced, credible and moving profile. She also creates an imagery-rich picture of Addis Ababa in all its colorful, raucous and dusty splendor. I feel almost like I've been there after reading this book.I only had two problems with the book--the first is a matter of craft and the second a matter of argumentation.Greene writes with a lot of feeling, which is one of the many reasons this book is so engaging. But, in describing many scenes where she herself was not present, she steps into the role of a third-person omniscient narrator, often detailing with great flourish the thoughts and emotions of children in tragic situations. There were times when her writing felt a bit audacious, and I found myself asking, how can you claim to know what this child felt and thought as he was being ripped from his dying mother's arms? I'm sure she conducted extensive interviews with the children, but I did feel like she encroached inappropriately on their emotional landscapes at times, giving them thoughts and feelings that were, perhaps, not their own.My second concern is regarding her argumentation. In discussing the history of HIV/AIDS, she does not take a neutral stance. Her argument is very moral and often very persuasive. She rightly condemns the ignorance, indifference and greed of Western governments and pharmaceutical companies for the ways in which they stood back and watched, or looked away, while HIV spread rapidly in marginalized and third-world communities. She also condemns the religious, conservative moralizers and their insistence on prevention rather than treatment. She makes a few really good claims, and I appreciate what I learned from her. But, the problem with her argument in my eyes is this: in order to distance herself from people like Jerry Falwell who believe that God engineered HIV as a unique punishment for homosexuals (and who can blame her for wanting to do that?), she completely ignores the fact that so many of the suffering women and children she profiles contracted the virus because of the moral failings of men in their communities. Greene writes as though rape, sexual exploitation and marital infidelity are sad inevitabilities not worth discussing. Acknowledging these elephants in the room does not mean that we ignore treatment options for those already infected with HIV, and it does not mean we assume that everyone contracted the virus these ways. But, we can't ignore the gross gender inequality and violence against women and girls that is facilitating the spread of HIV in the third world, particularly Africa.Just recently I read a BBC article that addressed the alarming HIV rate among girls in South Africa. The article states that "at least 28% of South African schoolgirls are HIV positive compared with 4% of boys because `sugar daddies' are exploiting them." 28%! Authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn explain the "sugar daddy" culture in their book Half the Sky: "In South Africa, successfully middle-aged men often keep young teenage girls as mistresses, and many teenagers see such `sugar daddies' as a ladder to a better life" (139).Also discussed in Half the Sky is the pervasive culture of rape that plagues many African nations:"In Darfur, it gradually became clear that the Sudanese-sponsored Janjaweed militias were seeking out and gang-raping women of three African tribes, cutting of their ears or otherwise mutilating them to mark them forever as rape victims...Sudan also blocked aid groups from bringing into Darfur postexposure prophylaxis kits, which can greatly reduce the risk that a rape victim will be infected with HIV" (83)."Mass rapes have been reported at stunning levels in recent conflicts. Half of women in Sierra Leone endured sexual violence or the threat of it during the upheavals in that country, and a United Nations report claims that 90 percent of girls and women over the age of three were sexually abused in part of Liberia during the civil war there" (83).Out of the Congo are numerous reports of rape being used as a tool of war.And regarding HIV and marital infidelity: "Routinely in Africa and Asia, women stay safe until they are married, and then they contract AIDS from their husbands" (138).There is a scene in There Is No Me Without You where the author listens to a man tell the story of his family, particularly the death of his wife. When the man alludes to the marital infidelity that infected him, and subsequently his wife, with HIV, Greene seems to pride herself in mentioning that none of the listeners, herself included, judged him at that moment. I'm not suggesting that he be scorned or spit upon, or treated meanly and without compassion. I'm not suggesting that he be left to think on his sins and languish in some trash-infested alley without treatment. I'm not suggesting that these problems are unique to Africa or even that we need to focus all of our attention on sexual ethics when it comes to the spread of HIV/AIDS. But, it does trouble me to consider the reality that if little white girls were being made into sexual baubles by older white men, and if white women were routinely contracting HIV from their unfaithful husbands, you wouldn't be able to hear yourself think over the cacophony of outrage. So, why is it that Greene, whose wrath burns against Western leaders and pharmaceutical companies, is incapable of arousing even a modicum of judgment for this poor man who brought ruin, even if inadvertently, to his entire family? Is it compassion and a spirit of equality that motivates her? Or is it a more subtle and insidious form of racism, the kind that, for fear of being politically-incorrect, refuses to view this man as a moral equal, a moral agent who was capable of being a better husband to his wife and a better father to his children, but chose not to? God help us if we continue to view rape, sexual exploitation and marital infidelity as sad inevitabilities, and God help us if we continue to view Africans as people who don't know any better.

I read this book years ago, and recently bought this for a friend as a gift. Have you ever read a book that sticks with you forever? That was this book for me. I read through it in a matter of days, and the tragic, beautiful, painful story has stuck with me. I carry it with me and I don’t regret it one bit. If you want to gain a lot of perspective, and appreciation for your life, read this book. It is beautifully written and entirely captivating.

Based on reviews, I expected a good book about a noble woman who altruistically takes care of AIDS orphans. Yes, it's that, but there was so much more depth and insight, and vastly superior writing than I had expected. This is not a hagiography. The author tells the story of this woman interspersed with information about AIDS (theories as to its origins, epidemiology statistics, the history of the development of medicines and their patents), and stories of families who've adopted Ethiopian orphans. She personalizes a catastrophe. She could inspire someone with no interest in small children (me) to (almost) want to adopt an orphan. What was most superb was how this story of this woman encompasses the strange turns lives can take. The Ethiopian woman, Haregewoin, didn't wake up one day and decide to open an orphanage. She was ready to effectively end her life due to grief over her daughter's death when a priest asked her to take care of one orphan, and that gave her a raison d'etre. This escalates into running a large orphanage and being pivotal in foreign adoptions. There are unexpected twists, even scandals, and an illustration of how no good deed goes unpunished. This story encapsulates the Internet's upside (intercontinental communication), and downside (misinformation spread so repetitively that it appears to be true). The most fascinating chapter was about Haregewoin's trip to the U.S. The most touching chapter was about an American couple taking their newly adopted two children to their birth village so they could see their grandfather before they left Ethiopia. After reading this, I find myself trying to picture 10% of everyone I know dying of AIDS. And having seven-year old girls taking care of their younger siblings, and having our best hope be that someone from China or Nigeria will swoop in to take the children off the sinking ship. That's very hard to picture, but that's the scenario depicted by this book.

This book is two stories side-by-side. One story is the very intimate portrayal of a woman who accidentally created an orphanage and found herself, for better or worse, knee-deep in an exploding and unrecognized crisis in Ethiopia. Things didn't always go well but she did the best she could with the tools she had and ultimately impacted the lives of many children (and adoptive parents!). The second story is the story of AIDS in Africa and the world's reaction to the crisis, and I guarantee that unless you have extensively studied on that subject you will be surprised and dismayed at what you learn. Definitely a must-read for every socially conscious human.

This novel takes place in the latter part of King Henry the Eighth's reign. Henry is sick-both physically and mentally-and has become a horrifying tyrant. His beloved queen, Jane Seymour, has been dead for two years, and he is preparing to make an important political marriage. Three women enter this setting; and the novel is narrated in turn by all of them. One is the quiet, intelligent Anne of Cleve's, who comes to England to marry the king. Another is Catherine Howard, a lively, sensual teenager who loves a boy her own age-but ends up catching the king's eye. Last of all is Jane Boleyn, the skilled courtier and maid of honor- whose testimony helped send her husband to the scaffold. This rich, absorbing novel is one of Ms Gregory's best, because she literally gives each woman her own voice. The writing style changes as each one speaks, so that the reading experience becomes more personal: you feel as if you KNOW these ladies, and this feeling leads you to care about them. I highly recommend this book.

This book makes a good follow-up to the movie "The Other Boleyn Girl," which I saw just before I read this book. The book is told from the perspectives of three women: Jane Boleyn (she refers to Anne as her "sister," which is confusing because she was her sister-in-law), Anne of Cleves and young Katherine Howard. The book's biggest flaw is that it was somewhat tedious to read Katherine's entries, with so much greedy focus on her possessions. It was interesting to read about an era vastly different from our own. Back then, a 50 year old was considered of "great age" (elderly) and impotence was often blamed on a curse, witch's spell or "ill-wishing."Court life was of course very interesting. Everyone around Henry was in danger - "The fire of the king's displeasure can burn up anyone".- "kinship with the king gives no immunity from fear, friendship with the king gives no safety." There was also no shortage of enemies within the court - "Everyone is always our enemy, but right now we are winning." Women were just pawns in the game.Philippa Gregory writes well and describes things in an interesting way, for example "Katherine holds his attention like a dancing mayfly holds the attention of the fat, gaping carp." The book's title is clever and explained towards the end of the book.

When it comes to historical fiction, I do think the most fascinating time period is the reign of King Henry VIII during the first half of the 16th century. Why? It was such a soap opera! Everything was done to excess—eating, drinking, gossiping, playing and most of all extraordinarily bad behavior. This book, part of the Plantagenet and Tudor Novels series by Philippa Gregory, tells the story of the fourth and fifth wives of old King Henry.No. 4 was Anne of Cleaves, the only one of his six wives to escape the marriage with her life intact. Henry despised her for many reasons, and only months after what he quickly considered a sham marriage, he caught the eye of 15-year-old Katherine Howard, portrayed in this book as a ditzy, greedy, vain and vapid little girl. While this fictional story that is faithful to the historical facts may read like a soap opera in the extreme, Philippa Gregory has written this book with a touch of literary genius. Each chapter is told in the first person by one of three people: Anne of Cleaves, Katherine Howard or Jane Boleyn, who served both Anne and Katherine as a lady-in-waiting and was the sister-in-law of the doomed Anne Boleyn. Gregory so deftly and vividly distinguishes each of these three women's personalities and voices that chapter titles are almost not needed. Read a few sentences, and you will know who is the narrator. It is an extraordinary writing feat that adds abundant richness to an already gripping narrative. And face it, that's tough to do when anyone who studied European history in high school already knows the tragic, gruesome and terror-filled ending.A valuable lesson to learn from this period of history: King Henry VIII may have received the crown humbly in 1509, but he turned into a tyrannical monarch who assumed he had the right to absolute power. He truly believed that whatever he did, no matter how horrific, violent or cruel, was the will of God. There were no checks and balances on his power. To silence his enemies, he killed them—thousands and thousands of them. He stole. He lied (a lot). He was duplicitous. He terrified an entire country. He proved that absolute power absolutely corrupts.

I love history, and imagining the lives of all those who lived and breathed before our own time. I've studied quite a bit of the Tudor era, and I like how Philippa Gregory takes historical fact and adds her own suggestions as to the motives of these historical figures. I like the personalization and the human element she puts on these very real people. My only critiques on The Boleyn Inheritance was that "the Boleyn Inheritance" was a phrase far too often repeated. It became redundant after awhile. I also felt that poor Katherine Howard was depicted as a bit too idiotic. Historically, she was a not very educated child; raised in a home with very little guidance and nurturing, this is true. However, she was just a child. A teenager could never hold a candle to the grace and intellect of Catherine of Aragon, or the wit and cosmopolitan air of Anne Boleyn. I thought it a bit unfair to depict her as such a total shallow idiot. Aside from these, I enjoyed this book very much.

The King's Prey: Saint Dymphna of Ireland (God's Forgotten Friends)

Review

"Susan Peek's best book yet! She has taken this story about a little known saint and created a heart-pounding adventure. As St. Dymphna flees her demented father, her journey across Ireland makes for an amazing story that will appeal to both genders. Girls will be inspired by this strong, kind, spiritual female. While boys will enjoy the equally compelling story of the two brothers, with a heart-breaking past, that help her. The combination of perfectly timed humor, riveting chase scenes, and swashbuckling fights makes for a must read book." - Reviewed by Leslea Wahl, Award-winning Author of The Perfect Blindside                                                                                           "Five Stars! Susan Peek has written a beautiful story of faith in her non-stop action book, The King's Prey: Saint Dymphna of Ireland. This is a story that will hold readers' attention from beginning to end. Everyone will relate to the emotions and feelings of the characters in this book. The unwavering faith that is portrayed inside these pages is a beautiful gift to the reader. The King's Prey: Saint Dymphna of Ireland is a must-read for all ages.I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is very well written, with a great plot, and a beautiful outcome with many lessons to be shared." - Reviewed by Teresa Syms for Readers' Favorite                                                                                                                                                "Five Stars! The King's Prey: Saint Dymphna of Ireland by Susan Peek is set against the backdrop of Ireland and brings Saint Dymphna to life. Saint Dymphna is the champion of any soul hurting, in mind or heart, and the story takes readers through broken hearts, misunderstandings, and sacrificial love. Turlough and Brioc are two Irish orphan brothers who come to the rescue of Dymphna and save her from marrying her widowed father, who thinks she is his late wife, Odilla. Dymphna flees the country with the help of a few of her companions. Running parallel to this story is the story of Turlough and Brioc whose entire family is lost due to famine and disease. The story gives readers a saint they can relate to and will love forever, and is also about how she reunites two brothers who are against each other. The story has many layers and I like the way the author seamlessly blends the story of Saint Dymphna with that of the two brothers, Brioc and Turlough. There is a lot of action, drama, and adventure in the plot. A deranged father and his desire to wed his own daughter, Dymphna's journey across Ireland while escaping from her father, the heartbreaking past of Turlough and Brioc, and the spiritual journey in the story make it a compelling read. The author portrays some strong, uplifting, and inspiring characters through the story and her descriptive narrative skills make the scenes vivid. The author's attempt in bringing back the forgotten Saint Dymphna through this book works well and I like the way she brings out contrasting themes of evil, sin, violence, ugliness, and turmoil against the beautiful emotions of sacrifice, faith, hope, and courage, and knits them together to give readers an exciting and memorable story. The way the author weaves the two plots together is very impressive. - Reviewed by Mamta Madhavan for Readers Favorite "If you read Saint Magnus,The Last Viking with bated breath, The King's Prey will leave you gasping! This inspiring and gripping novel will introduce you to a saint you will love forever! Teenage girls will see that Dymphna was just like them, a real girl, while young men will thrill at the heart-stopping action and meet heroes they can easily relate to. If ever a Heavenly friend was needed in these times of widespread depression and emotional instability, this forgotten Irish saint is it! My students have waited for this one with the greatest anticipation!" - Sister Mary Roberta, Teaching Nun  "Neither stiff nor stuffy, The King's Prey brings home that the saints were people just like us! Those of us who teach youth realize how necessary it is to have this kind of literature available for our young Catholics today." - Father Antonio of the Immaculate Conception, O.S.F. "Incredible emotional adventure. Will hold readers' attention from the beginning to the end. The unwavering faith that is portrayed inside these pages is a beautiful gift to the reader. Very well written . . . A must-read for all ages." - Readers' Favorite (Awarded 5 Stars)

My kids love Susan Peek's books. My teenage daughter asked for this one and "Crusader King" for Christmas. She's already finished them by New Year's day, and my son is now reading them. They both love the stories, and especially how Susan Peek brings the saints to life. My daughter has said several times that she likes these more than some other "saint books" because the saints seem more like normal people who she can relate to, rather than some idyllic and unrealistic "fairy tale".

Wow what a thrilling saint book for teenagers and adults! It is non stop action, with a Catholic worldview. And boy is it a story worth reading. Also it treats the subject of PTSD with great sensitivity. I would caution that the subject of a mad father wanting to evilly marry his daughter is probably not for younger teens. None the less this is a story that needs to be told in this day and age, It is a story well worth reading.

This is a book with no boring parts! I really liked the fictitious characters Susan Peek created to help tell Saint Dymphna's story (and, I admit, the dog even added zing to the book). I love titles that have meanings you don't understand until you get into the story, and this title is perfect! I can't wait for more stories of little-known saints by Mrs. Peek!

First I wanted to thank you for telling St. Dymphna's story. She has always been one of my favorites, and always helps when asked. I also write and have used her in my material, so it's good to see others telling of her ordeal. The author does a wonderful job telling this exciting story, and of the attributes of the saint. A bitter-sweet yarn which includes everything this saint helps with, including anxiety and PTSD, just to name a few.I noticed others have criticized the author for using "modern language' when describing the characters in this book. Those criticisms are unwarranted as the author is a storyteller and has put it in context that modern readers can relate to.I'm a 56 year old man, and enjoyed this book, Just thrilling! I recommend it , especially for those who feel alone in their emotional troubles and struggles.

Is this book for teens? I would have liked more depth for the character of a saint. Other than that it is entertaining and many parts draw you in. The language too, throws me and could have been more authentic to the time period. I was thrown every time I read a modern saying like a sarcastic "as if" or "lame, lame, lame," and found comments like these through out the book.

Wonderful story. Great character development. If the goal of the book was to inspire a love, appreciation for, and devotion to St. Dymphna it was a success. St. Dymphna and St. Gerebernus pray for us.

Great book! The author's gift of description of both the surroundings and each character's inner thoughts and feelings is amazing. The author surely is gifted and I believe anointed. (Each chapter unravels to the next, in a coherent, thrilling manner.) Most importantly, I now feel like I really know Saint Dymphna. This book was the highlight of my summer reading. I highly recommend it.

True, I'll never think of St. Dymphna the same way now. What an amazing story! Surprises at every turn. Great job!

It's a little outdated at this point and doesn't cover some of the countries that are attracting business travel in today's day and age (e.g. Vietnam). I would like another edition that's slightly more updated but otherwise the content that is here is very complete.

Super reference for anyone doing international business, and even college and high school students. Useful, actionable information from the authors!

Doesn't apply to all situations. To put in perspective, read the chapter on your own country. Then assume it has about the same accuracy for other countries. A significant portion of business negotiations are based on the personality of the other party. Keep that in mind.

It is a good book with useful information.

Very practical guide and tips to doing business in non-US countries. The book saves me a lot of research.

Global business demands a knowledge of global etiquette. This is an excellent short, quick breakdown for travelers who do business in other countries. Get the book! It will help you!

This book gave me many tools to better connect to my audience. My only regret is waiting so long to purchase it.

This has been a life saver when dealing with individuals from other ethnic groups from other nationalities and the formalities of their natural social customs and references.
