About the Author

Robert M. Thorson―scientist, teacher, writer― is Professor of Geology at the University of Connecticut, where he holds a joint appointment between the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) and the Department of Anthropology, with additional responsibilities to the Honors Program and the Integrated Geosciences Program. He teaches courses, advises students, performs sponsored research, serves on committees, and provides articles, reviews and interviews. Beyond the classroom, he writes a weekly Thursday column for The Hartford Courant, and coordinates the Stone Wall Initiative, now in the process of being incorporated into the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History (Connecticut Archaeology Center). He is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, The Geological Society of America, and the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Science.

Just got a copy of this book for myself after reading a library copy and realizing I had to have a copy for myself. If you really want to get a feel for the sweep of time, geology, the love of stone not just as an "artifact' but as "scientific object" a particular "landform" born of glaciers a mile high and human hands seeing to plant a crop in a stony field. I love his "passion for rocks." This is a must-read if you are a true New Englander (whether you've ever lived here or not). I will cherish it for its poetry as much as for its prose. A thing well-written is a joy forever.

As an ex-north east resident this was a nice historical read on how and why the stone walls were created that I had never heard in the time I had lived there!

And Professor Thorson's writing style is commendablyclear and readable, with a poet's affection for his topic.Quite simply one of the best nonfiction books I think I have everread (and I read quite a lot), for its perfect fusion of research, understanding and sentiment.Almost an answer to my prayers during so many long, wandering and wondering forest walks.I encourage you to read this book.

The very best kind of popular science. It's direct, believable, and easy to read and enjoy. I moved here to New England about 14 years ago and I just bought this. It's given me a new way to look at the streetside and forest walls I pass every day on car and bike.

Very interesting history book. Since I had family in the Jamestown Colony and Mass Bay Colony, it also reminded me of the back breaking work necessary to make a field to raise animals and hay on.

I am a novice builder of stone walls and was looking for a bit of history and some building tips. The history is in the book but the writing style was difficult for me.

I live in the northeast where I have observed these fences. I had no idea I could find such an informed book about them. Now when I see them I know how and why they are there. Good research explained for the non-geologists among us.

Our house that we had built 10 years ago is surrounded by a stone wall and I have always wondered how it came about. While it doesn't talk specifically about our property, it does answer where the stone walls in NH came from and it is so interesting to read. I am so glad he did the research and wrote this book, because I think we take these walls for granted by them just always being there. I appreciate them so much more now.

It's Prince Valiant near newspaper size. What more can I say?

FIRST:As it occurred in volume 16, and as I then wrote in my review, the color print proofs in this volume were not correctly scanned (obviously, the scanning for volumes 16 and 17 was made at the same time) and the cyan infiltrated all the coloring and the poorest result is that all characters are dark skinned. The aspect is so strange that I have to check my collection of original and big newspaper Sunday pages in search of traces of cyan on the skin of Val, Aleta and the others. NO, THERE ARE NOT. The color of the skin is as always was: 25% yellow + 25% magenta. Instead of assuming the volume 16 error, the editors repeated it and decided to sustain it by creating the theory that the original color proofs used by them really have blue on the skin. Amazing! Every PV fan with PV newspaper pages or with some of the original color proofs knows that such theory is absolutely untrue. And there is also the fact the some of the original watercolored guides made by the colorist and sent to the engravers still exist and show clearly there isn’t blue on the skin. The editors also say that some newspapers did not like the skin color changes and recolored the strips in-house, thus maintaining the traditional look. If this were true, where are those pages (that, they say, are majority) with bluish skin? Why haven’t I at least one, only one, in my collection? Why among the collectors no one has a sample, at least one sample?SECOND.The editors attribute the illustration of pages 1757, 1760, 1764, 1765, 1766 and 1767 to John Cullen Murphy and Gray Morrow, but THIS IS NOT TRUE! Of those pages, the only illustrated by them are 1757 and 1760, and the others are by Hal Foster. This should be very clear for a real Foster fan and was always well known, and is confirmed by Hal Foster himself (and his wife) in his interview to Arn Saba in 1979, published in the “Comics Journal” no. 102, September 1985. So, when did this legend begun? It begun in 1992 with “A Prince Valiant Companion”, by Todd Goldberg and Carl Horak, continued with vol. 39 of the “Prince Valiant” softcover published by Fantagraphics in 2000, and was amplified by “The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion”, published in 2009, where Brian M. Kane preferred to believe religiously the words of Gray Morrow’s widow (almost 40 years after the facts!), than the words of Hal and Helen Foster, only 9 years after the facts. And the most strange thing is that the interview by Arn Saba with these words is reprinted in the same “The Definitive Prince Valiant Companion”!

What more can I say others haven't already. This is nothing less than the greatest and most beautiful adventure comic of all time, and Fantagraphics has once again done impeccable justice to it with this stunning book. Ignore what the hater said about problems with the colors. I can find no fault with it. I can't wait for volume 18.

This is a well written book on recovery from incest. It is an easier read than The Courage To Heal, but more than that it is written by a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. McKinnon's prose is easy to follow and understand. You don't need a Master's degree to know where she is going with her program and it might even change how you see any abuse you may have experienced. It is reasonably priced and a must for anyone who treats people who have been abused as children. Solidly written.

I also recommended book Repair Your Life Workbook along with this book as they do go together. It is a great resource and great for small group studies. I have always loved true stories and Marjorie McKinnon tells her story and writes to help all those who need it and that in itself helped my decision to want both books. © 2016 Jackie Paulson

This book here is a treasure. Every tattoo artist that does Celtic Irish Gaelic words on people needs this book. Look you don't want to go to Ireland with your groovy tattoo you got down at Myrtle Beach at 3:45 am...who does that?... And have the Hakney driver start laughing at you so hard that he takes you to the local pub to have the locals look and laugh at your tattoo that you thought said "Guns and Roses" in Gaelic and instead you find out it means "I have this Rosey rash near me groin or on me bum"... now most of the county thinks your a Twit. Don't let this happen to you. The book has a number of horror stories and good intentions gone wrong. There is a crash course in how words are put together why you should never believe anything you see on the internet and The best part is the words and Phrases by category that have been double triple checked by a group of Gaelic speakers. Bring it with you when you go to get that tattoo so people will see your message and go "Nice ink". They Also have a Scottish version as well. Now you can get that "Ride to live live to ride" tattoo done correctly!

Clear, concise and correct. As a lover and a sometime teacher of the Irish language, I have been frequently asked to translate an English phrase for use as a tattoo. I always refer them to someone with better Irish because if someone is going to permanently ink something on their skin, it ought to be correct. A small error in spelling or in the placement of the fada can change the meaning of a phrase entirely to something which makes no sense at all. Frequently English expressions become utter nonsense in a literal direct Irish translation. (Avoid Google Translate!) Ms.Nickel's book outlines the pitfalls and presents pages of appropriate translations. Not only for tattoo artists or those contemplating a tattoo. It is also a great resource for language learners who wish to build vocabulary. Tá sé go hiontach.

This is so incredibly excellent and handy! We'll probably use it more for art design than tattoos, but it serves that function admirably, AND comes with an excellent introduction chock-full of historical and cultural context for your use of these Irish phrases. I'd give it ten stars if I could.

This really has almost nothing to do with Tattoos. It is more a correction of grammar for tattoos for those who want to use Irish Gaelic.

To reiterate: THERE IS NO ART HERE. It is a solid exposition to help you avoid pitfalls mistranslating Irish Gaelic phrases in text. Fascinating even if you never get the tattoo. Brief but useful. You may also enjoy her website, audreynickel.com.

I enjoy this book for the authentic Irish-language quotes and phrases, and for the notes on translation and grammar. If you love Irish Gaelic, this is an entertaining and informative read, even if you aren't planning to get an Irish tattoo. If you are, I'd say it's essential reading.

An excellent and much needed book.

If you're thinking of getting an Irish tattoo you should definitely read this book first. Mistakes on your skin are hard and painful to rectify. I am an Irish speaker myself so I vouch for the accuracy of this book. Even if you don't intend to get a tattoo this book is informative.

George Jorgensen went to Copenhagen in the early 1950s to consult experts in sexual deviance, he was afraid they'd simply proclaim him a fairy. A full battery of hormonal and psychological tests revealed that, while he was drawn to men, he was no garden-variety homophile; he was a lady. Keeping the secret from his family, Jorgensen endured a groundbreaking series of operations, finally emerging in November 1952 as a delicately beautiful young woman. "I merely wanted to correct what I considered a misjudgment of Nature," wrote Jorgensen, who died in 1989. No one seeing the photographs included here (many of them new to this edition) can doubt the success of Jorgensen's transformation or wonder too long at the fascination she engendered back home, where a newspaper bought her story for $20,000 and she was proclaimed New York City's Woman of the Year. I can't remember where I heard about this book,but it sounded pretty interesting. It started off okay and you can forgive the fact that it's not written by a practiced writer, but it was a bit boring. I didn't find any depth in this autobiography, any struggles experienced were really glossed over, no fears , family and friends were all instantly accepting, no worries surrounding the surgery or anything else. It might have been about getting a tonsilectomy. Most of the issues were about getting an acting career off the ground and too much name dropping in my opinion . It was kind of a waste of reading time and too superficial. I had hoped for more depth.

This is a must read book for those interested in gender identity issues, as well as for those who enjoy memoirs. Ms. Jorgensen was the first American to have a sex change operation and undergo such public scrutiny. Though she never intended to have her transformation become public knowledge, it was leaked to the press, and from then on, her life was never the same. In the cultural milieu of the nineteen fifties, Ms. Jorgensen's sex change was big news.Starting her life out as George Jorgensen, she never quite felt that she fit in and became a loner by inclination. One striking issue in the book, however, is that she came from an extremely loving and supportive family who always unconditionally accepted her as she was, both before and after her metamorphosis. Not every transgendered individual is as lucky as Ms. Jorgensen appears to have been with respect to familial relationships. Perhaps it was because her parents were of Danish descent, and Scandinavian people tend to be more accepting of these issues.Relentlessly upbeat, the book is a flattering and politely idealized memoir, as if anything too dark were exorcised from its pages. The chapters which cover Ms. Jorgensen's time in Denmark, where her change took place, are somewhat superficial and non-clinical. There is no real indication of any personal struggle or self-doubt with respect to her decision to undergo a life changing transformation. One has to remember, however, that this book was originally published approximately thirty five years ago, when the public's sensibilities on such issues were far more delicate.What does come across in this autobiography is that Ms. Jorgensen had the courage to make a decision that for the time was somewhat unique and cutting edge, as there was virtually no literature available for the general public on transsexualism, and gender identity studies were still in their nascent stage. Ms. Jorgensen essentially paved the way for others by bringing to the public consciousness issues that had not before been the subject of public discussion. In bringing these issues into the public domain, she was subject to a torrent of abuse, as well as discriminatory practices, and seemed to be the endless butt of jokes. She took these problems in stride, however, and always managed to have the last laugh. Laughter, indeed, appears to have been the best medicine.Ms. Jorgensen, an attractive natural blonde, who personified the stereotypic feminine ideal of the time, became an entertainer. Given her notoriety, her career options were limited, as she gathered a crowd whenever her identity became known. Playing the hand that was dealt her, she parlayed her notoriety into a successful club act, digressing into acting. She managed to make a success of herself, living a life that was interesting, but hardly scandalous. While this is an intriguing memoir, it is not an in depth profile of Ms. Jorgensen. The reader comes away knowing about Ms. Jorgensen, rather than knowing her. Still, all in all, it is a worthwhile read.

The story is very touching and interesting. You can't help liking Christine. The reason for only 3 stars is it can be a bit boring at times. Drags on with things not relevant to story. I hoped there would be more medical details about the operations she went through.She was a brave person and a kind, gentle woman.

This is the first book dealing with transgender issues that I ever read back in the 1970s ... wonderful account. Though, having seen clips of Christine over the years, I think she paints a picture of herself that might be just an ever bit too angelic.

THIS CASE ILLUSTRATES THE IDEA THAT EVEN THOUGHT FACED WITH ADVERSE CIRCUMSTANCES ONE CAN OVERCOME ALL ODDS IF ONE IS HONOST WITH ONE'S SELF AND DETERMINED. THIS STORY IS AMAZING.

It was very informative but a little too much detail about the periphery characters lives that I felt added nothing but length to her story.
