This is not my full review. I am just checking in after reading about 60 pages. I will chime in again as I digest the material a little more over the next month or so. I will try to say something scholarly later, but for now, I’m thinking about the clinical applications for this work. If you are a speech-language pathologist or an applied behavioral analyst (never mind, I don’t think the BCBA is interested in this book) who works with autistics and you think that you can operantly condition language, read this book. If you already know your Stern and your Trevarthen, just read page 56 for now. Page 56 is everything. Assess where each child is developmentally in terms of back and forth emotional signaling, intentionality, understanding intentions, sharing intentions, dyadic capacities and triadic capacities. Please don’t teach pronouns and abstract verbs to a child who is not yet “triadic.” I would call this book a “game changer” but Tomasello has been changing my speech therapy game for the last 10 years. If you are able to read between the lines, this work answers a lot of clinical questions. I don’t think that was the author’s aim, so it will be up to the clinician-reader to know how to apply the research described in this book. Not only am I grateful for this work, but I believe there are many happy parents who are pleased that we targeted features like back and forth emotional signaling and proto-conversations rather than 3-word requesting ("I want book") in their children who were not yet showing the capacity for triadic interactions. Over time, their children have become spontaneously and creatively symbolic. PS I think you CAN operantly condition kids to say words. I don’t even think that is difficult for most. But, you can’t force those words to have meaning to the child.

I’m always rooting for the underdog, in this case, based on the quality of this text, I’m assuming it’s a smaller publisher competing with the big publishers.Unfortunately, this book needed much editing before going to print. It’s hard to believe this is the second edition. There are glaring typos and inaccuracies throughout the book. I also wish the writing was clearer. It seems they went out of their way to avoid any semblance of plagiarism, but that made the book harder to read,I’ve used other resources to help me better understand this text. The online resources for this textbook have been good so far.

I rented this textbook for my daughter. I can't speak for the book itself, since I'm not in nursing school, but the process to rent textbooks was great. Very easy and extremely convenient.

If you want to learn about the history of bluegrass all the way from Bill Monroe to Cherryholmes and Cadillac Sky, then Rosenberg is NOT the book for you. Although this "revised" edition was published in 2005, it is essentially the same book originally published in 1985, and even that narrative pretty well stopped in the mid-1970s.That said, this is a terrific history of the formative decades of bluegrass. Rosenberg's chronology is almost dizzying in its detail - so many musicians, record executives, festival promoters, radio station owners, magazine publishers, etc. to track in your mind as you read along. I am a former broadcaster and it was especially fun to remember what the "ecosystem" of the radio and music industries was like in the 50s and 60s.Rosenberg is at his best when analyzing the individual and cultural forces that led to the big breakthroughs for this musical form, and he exhibits a good understanding of the tensions between urban and rural fans and between young innovators and older traditionalists. The only place I think he went off track was in some overly academic analyses of bluegrass in film and television. Thanks, but I don't need to have The Beverly Hillbillies deconstructed.Overall, though, I learned a lot and gained a deeper appreciation for a musical form that I have enjoyed for many years. Well worth reading.

Neil Rosenberg has written a fine starter-kit book for those interested in bluegrass. This one gets you into the music and allows you to understand the principals but you will have to read another book or two which are a tad more contemporary to get the entire and indeed current picture of what bluegrass music really is today. Three and a half stars if you ask me.

The definitive book on the history of bluegrass, "Bluegrass" does a great job balancing an explanation of the musical components, the cultural background of the music and the history in individual musicians who created it. Essential reading for anybody interested in bluegrass or Americana.

A very dry history of bluegrass. Did not enjoy reading this book.

An encyclopedia of bluegrass history. Full of facts and stories about the great performers. A great buy.

I very much appreciate this extensive resource on bluegrass.My only disappointment is that though it was "revised" in 2005, nothing has been added since the original publication in 1985, presumably because it would require a second volume.

If you love Bluegrass then you will want this book. Rosenberg does a great job of documenting bluegrass history. A must have! I would buy again and recommend to others.

Tony Dungy is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Quiet Strength. He led the Indianapolis Colts to Super Bowl victory in 2007, the first such win for an African American coach. Very few 5 stars ratings, but EVERYONE should read/study this book! (a few too many sports metaphors and analogies, but that's his point of reference). A truly un-common man, in today's world of weak, and low character population. I needed to hear, re-hear everything in this book. I recall being in a staff meeting some years ago and the team leader mentioned mentioned. I blurted out, who is Tony Dungy? fortunately no one looked at me like I was the idiot I felt like, after I discovered who Tony Dungy is. Since that time I set out to find out more about him and now I have bought his books. I must say that they are remarkable. Truly outstanding reads. I really like the fact that he is a Christian. His books share such good information for everyone from sports fan, Christian book readers, and the casual reader. Great book for family.

When I first read Uncommon, I knew it was the perfect book for my students: young men I teach English to in prison on the island of Trinidad. I hoped they would feel that this book was as special as I thought it was. They were blown away. They couldn't wait to get the Uncommon Daily Challenge by Dungy as well. Uncommon has become a guide for their lives. Every week my students are excited to tell me something they realize about their lives because of Uncommon. Their dream is to meet Coach Dungy some day.

As a woman reading this book, I found that it was geared towards men. I didn't realize this until I started reading it, but I'm glad I finished it. It's so important for our youth today to have positive male role models and great dads in the home. Unfortunately, many of our youth no longer have this.Dungy shares stories of role models he had in his life and the influence his dad made on him. It was the combination of the male role models and both of his parents that made a difference in his life. Anyone can be a positive role model to our young men today, and Dungy challenges men to do just that. Excellent challenge and principles to live by.

A motivational read that kept me uplifted and intrigued by hearing the stories of people from different walks of life. I’ve been a fan of Natalie since she won Miss Universe in 2005; so lovely to understand her perspective on winning in life and that her inner and outer beauty both shine bright.
