This is not my full review. I am just checking in after reading about 60 pages. I will chime in again as I digest the material a little more over the next month or so. I will try to say something scholarly later, but for now, I’m thinking about the clinical applications for this work. If you are a speech-language pathologist or an applied behavioral analyst (never mind, I don’t think the BCBA is interested in this book) who works with autistics and you think that you can operantly condition language, read this book. If you already know your Stern and your Trevarthen, just read page 56 for now. Page 56 is everything. Assess where each child is developmentally in terms of back and forth emotional signaling, intentionality, understanding intentions, sharing intentions, dyadic capacities and triadic capacities. Please don’t teach pronouns and abstract verbs to a child who is not yet “triadic.†I would call this book a “game changer†but Tomasello has been changing my speech therapy game for the last 10 years. If you are able to read between the lines, this work answers a lot of clinical questions. I don’t think that was the author’s aim, so it will be up to the clinician-reader to know how to apply the research described in this book. Not only am I grateful for this work, but I believe there are many happy parents who are pleased that we targeted features like back and forth emotional signaling and proto-conversations rather than 3-word requesting ("I want book") in their children who were not yet showing the capacity for triadic interactions. Over time, their children have become spontaneously and creatively symbolic. PS I think you CAN operantly condition kids to say words. I don’t even think that is difficult for most. But, you can’t force those words to have meaning to the child.
