A strong advocate of SAP, the author really does not give one the feeling that the advice is truly impartial. The advice can summed up with "no matter what you think, SAP is wonderful, SAP can do anything and one should just knuckle down and learn SAP". He makes the point well and his perspective makes a lot of sense. There is much solid guidance for one faced with an SAP implementation, so the book is useful and worth reading. The book would have greatly benefitted from better summations at the end of each section. He did this with some sections and not with others. Finally, the multiple spelling errors grate after only a few pages and continue to annoy right through, making reading frustrating.Be aware that the book is considerably out of date, so it should only be used to consider and develop attitudes to the implementation and use of SAP.
This is an excellent book for the functional consultant, project manager or business professional seeking to implement SAP in their organization. I found the information invaluable and YES I GET it, use the STANDARD SAP software! It was not hard to read (even though the book could use some serious editing) and I simply could not put it down! I wished he would have given more direct information on how to break into SAP as career, for obvious and understandable reasons there's so much bias against junior consultants. In either case I got great information from it and I recommend it highly.
Mr.Birchall has produced a rare gem in the world of SAP books. Full of practical wisdom based on personal experience, non-conventional but effective ideas implemented in the real world and a rollicking style of writing makes this one SAP book that is extrelmely useful as well as interesting. As an IT professional of 25 years (including as SAP consultant), I have been involved in enough good, bad and average IT projects to appreciate Mr.Birchall's thoughts and recommendations about what to do and what not to do in an implementation.Yes, there are a large number of grammatical errors which mar the perfection of the book but these will, hopefully, be eliminated in a possible next edition.Thank you sir for your beautiful gift.
I've been working with enterprise software for quite a long time, so the book didn't hold many surprises for me (although there are some decent SAP tips and tricks in the back). If you haven't implemented a real ERP system (and certainly if you've never implemented a full-bore one like SAP), it's worth a read. While I do have a fundamentally different take on the value of such systems (which I'll get to shortly), the author makes many good points. In particular, I agree with his take on training (as in, most end user knowledge transfer happens as you go live) and documentation (as in, document only as much as you absolutely have to).I've written a longer review on my blog[...]
I found the writting both entertaining and sort of deja vu of my own experience. I might not agree with all written, but highly recommended for those who are considering seriously installing SAP or are in the process. Also excellent reading for both Business and Tech regarding real expectations through different real life scenarios.
As someone in the MM/SD/APO functional space with about 2-3 implementations, I really enjoyed this book, as it is focused on MM - thats the guys background, and it gave some good general tips - "leave it SAP standard as much as possible and here's why", and it made me fell like I had done another few implementations after reading. Pretty bad spelling mistakes - if the publishers do another print, let me know and I will proof it for them! But for what I was looking for it was great.
Independent advice from an independent SAP consultant. Years of experience translate into sound advice, some common sense but most based upon field experience. Highly recommended reading for those doing a SAP project for the first time.Sap - a Map of the Minefield
This book shared the experiences of others so I feel better about making decisions about how to plan for the configuration of the system.
